Not trying to say that Butcher is going to be as good as Barnett, but there is literally zero reason to doubt this guy. If anyone watched the spring game from his first spring on campus (he was an EE btw..knows the defense better than most by now I'd say, etc.), but in the Circle of Life drill he won his battle against Jack Jones who stands at 6'4, 307 lbs, outweighing butcher by 50+ lbs. The same Jack Jones who played in 9 games last year, started against Bama and didn't allow a sack against UGA.

He's fast and mean, and clearly talented. Plus he's got some crazy in him which I like a lot. I like Darrell Taylor, but he hasn't given a reason for people to think he's better than Butcher. Same for Austin Smith, who has barely practiced the position of DE. Haters gonna hate, but give this kid a chance before you crucify him.

Butcher is up to 275 now.
Bright bright future for him. He will be key in the rotation for years to come. The kid is a bull.

based on last year and Shoops comments, you may be right. However, what we DO KNOW thus far is he is a practice warrior but on game day cannot make the play.


Maybe that changes this year with Shoop, I really do hope so...

I think you're right, might be a Wes Overstreet type guy.. He managed to play a lot but if I'm not mistaken he had some incredible linemen ahead of him also..

Well Kongbo is the ideal but there aren't a lot of guys his size. Plenty of smaller DEs have gotten it done. Butcher is the same size as Vereen and as Michael Sam was.

I'm not saying that he'll be a superstar. Just that people are too quick to assume he'll never play. He's got 4 years of eligibility left.

When did Austin Smith move to DE?

I thought he was a LB last year, right? Thought he did really well too.

I think a lot of people here are too quick to assume that players are unable to progress with age and experience.

Sure, Jumper was hot garbage in games last year. But I've seen a lot of players who looked bad as freshmen and sophomores go on to be solid or even very good as seniors.

I'm not saying that will happen with Jumper (I think a younger guy will likely pass him up by the time he has a crack at starting), but people who assume that he hasn't and will never improve are just being ignorant.

He moved to DE in the spring, but missed time due to a shoulder (I think) injury.

He'll be really big for the DE rotation next year after we've lost 3-4 DEs.

I do not get the Butcher hate, but yet people anoint Taylor as the next big thing. We've seen neither play a game of any meaningfull time. VolNation at its finest.

DE or DT??

Serious question, how many 6'-6.5", 282 lbs DEs do you think there are in college football? Kongbo is not the norm, or the minimum expectation for a DE. He is more of an exception.

He is 6'3", 275 lol.

Barnett is 6'3"-6'4", 265. Vereen is 6'2-6'3 and i think less than 260.

Where are all these Kongbo sized DEs that you guys think are the minimum requirement to play DE in the SEC??

Jumper is slow giving credence to stereotypes. We all love Josh Smith. That kid breaks all stereotypes arguments to shreds.

Doesanyone with some knowledge of Coach Shoop's defense know if he uses any 34 fronts ?! That would seem an ideal way to get some of the talent on the field. We seem to have a few tweeners at the DE position.
