Shoop toying with tweaks up front on defense

Doesanyone with some knowledge of Coach Shoop's defense know if he uses any 34 fronts ?! That would seem an ideal way to get some of the talent on the field. We seem to have a few tweeners at the DE position.

Seems like if he did use that type of formation, Darrell Taylor and Austin Smith would be perfect for a hybrid Maggitt type of player. Taylor is at 6'4 240lb, Smith is 6'3 about 240lb as well. Maggitt was 6'3-6'4, 250lb. I would bet Shoop has plans for those two since them going up against tackles that weight 310+ lbs constantly might not go their way.

Seems like I read in one of the practice threads, Phillips is showing out big time, 2 QB sacks already and not even in pads yet.

Not trying to say that Butcher is going to be as good as Barnett, but there is literally zero reason to doubt this guy. If anyone watched the spring game from his first spring on campus (he was an EE btw..knows the defense better than most by now I'd say, etc.), but in the Circle of Life drill he won his battle against Jack Jones who stands at 6'4, 307 lbs, outweighing butcher by 50+ lbs. The same Jack Jones who played in 9 games last year, started against Bama and didn't allow a sack against UGA.

He's fast and mean, and clearly talented. Plus he's got some crazy in him which I like a lot. I like Darrell Taylor, but he hasn't given a reason for people to think he's better than Butcher. Same for Austin Smith, who has barely practiced the position of DE. Haters gonna hate, but give this kid a chance before you crucify him.

I see some Jared Allen when I watch Butcher's film. Kids got a never ending motor. I'd say his pursuit and that motor are indeed, SEC TRAITS.

based on last year and Shoops comments, you may be right. However, what we DO KNOW thus far is he is a practice warrior but on game day cannot make the play.

Maybe that changes this year with Shoop, I really do hope so...

But the player is still well regarded, while the DC is gone. Was Jumper, as you say, only a practice warrior, or was he lined up wrong? Time will tell.

I do not get the Butcher hate, but yet people anoint Taylor as the next big thing. We've seen neither play a game of any meaningfull time. VolNation at its finest.

How dare you criticize our talent evaluators?

C'mon man...we haven't had a DE the size of Kongbo since Shaun Ellis and Ellis wasn't the freak of nature with <10% body fat that Kongbo appears to be.

Butcher is plenty big enough to be an effective DE in the SEC IF he has the talent. Remember 3 time all-American David Pollack at GA? He was 6'-2" and around 250.

The way VN wants to rag on Jumper and Butcher, it makes me wonder if there's not a "white player" bias on here with many posters?

Come on man!!! A white player bias? Jumper was just playing garbage football last year and IMO, actually cost us the game against Oklahoma, almost single-handedly! I'm white, by the way.

Jumper may have a light come on and become a great player here. But any big boy playing time needs to be earned by playing like a man possessed when we put our back ups in during the 4th quarter. Starting him against teams like UF and OU has got to stop until he proves under the lights that he can play at that level.

Could you imagine a 34 with Tuttle and Kongbo at end, K-Mac at NG and Barnett, JRM, Kirkland, and Smith or Taylor at LB ?! I would love to see that group on the field on third and long !!!

You lose all credibility when you declare one player lost a game for UT.

On 3rd and long I like the personnel grouping but put 'em in a 5-2, one of those front five guys has his paws on the QB in 2 seconds almost every time, those five would make it look like a jail break. JRM & Kirkland to clean up anything put into the air short over the middle, I don't see the need for standing 2 guys up and 2 or 3 steps off the LOS. I want 'em to know we're coming on 3rd and long with this bunch.

why does race always have to come into play? Colton/ Jumper arent the best of what we got, nothing to do with color folks

Ummm, you serious clark?

You quoted me like I was so just wondering?

The post above mine said everybody trashes Butcher/Jumper like folks have a prob with white people. I thought that was funny honestly. Guess blue font really is that important 👌

Btw, white lives do matter also. So do red, yellow, black and any other color person that God (or the big bang, mother nature, Satan, or aliens etc) created.

Smile a lil friend, this is the year these ORANGE fella's kick the snot outa some teams!

Why would you want your best pass rusher in Barnett further away from the QB?

I'll trust Shoop's ability to evaluate an opponents OL and put folks on the inside that can exploit a weaker player. If he sees someone that he believes Barnett or Kongbo can get around and disrupt the QB, I could see special packages designed for that kind of thing.

I think I read were Barnett Volunteered to move inside some. I also trust Shoops ability! He will have us ready and I believe our defense will be better than we think!

Well there's 9 total and take the 2 starters off of that and it leaves 7 that Shoop has to find reps for....maybe that's what he meant.

Eh I don't think so. I think he meant that he has 7 guys who are able to contribute and deserve meaningful reps that he has to find a way to work in.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. The DE in a 34 is responsible for two gaps ?! So he potentially could occupy a guard and tackle. If Barnett is lined up at OLB and coming off the edge on passing downs, someone is going to have to make a business decision. What are you going to do?! If you're the oppositions LT , do you try and get a piece of Kongbo or Tuttle and try to get back to Barnett ?! Or hope your center and guard can handle K-Mac and Tuttle, and leave you singled up with Barnett ?! That's why I would have him at OLB. That and he has the skill set to pull it off and it would make him more attractive to NFL teams that run a base 34. His physical measurements say at the next level he's an OLB in a 34. Not that I wouldn't draft him if I ran a base 43.
