Looking at the slot WR board for 2017, I don't think I would. Newsome is as talented or more so than anyone I see we have a realistic shot at. Might come down to Payton on the outside or Newsome in the slot. IMO losing Perry, Henderson, and Nixon, I'd probably take Newsome if he was ready to be a Vol now.

"Tennessee didn't pull his offer. Ryan really liked Tennessee but his parents didn't want him to go that far away. If location wasn't an issue, it was going to be either Tennessee or UCLA.

The coaching staff told him they would find a way to make it work if he wanted in, but in the end his parents wanted him closer to home.

Obviously, Texas didn't work out and I think he and his family are very ok with him exploring his options.

And yes, Tennessee is involved here. We will see if it goes any further than just talks. Remember, if he joins he will count against 2017. And, if they put the Lewis kid on scholarship this fall he will count against 2017 as well. That would just leave 23 initials left for Tennessee in 2017."

Going to come down to do they like him better than their 2017 options. at this point our 2017 options don't look great

question is do we have room for him in the 2017 class? There are plenty of positions I covet with highly ranked prospects than the slot.

Jones and Nixon were committed to play in the slot before Nixon bailed. I think it's reasonable to think the staff wants 2 this cycle. Might be as simple as weighing is Newsome or the kid from VA, Capehart a better option.

"I've been staying in touch with Ryan Newsome the last few days and Tennessee was one of the first schools to get in touch once he received his release.

But, the Vols let him know after they tried to work on numbers they just won't be able to find room right now.

He has a number of other schools interested and he will likely head there and not do a Juco this fall.

I think Tennessee spent a few days trying to see if they can find out a way to make room for him in August, but it doesn't look like it will work out."
