I guess we should't have taken Kamara either since he couldn't "cut it" at Alabama.
I'm suggesting sometimes situations don't work out for players. It's not always about talent.
Bama would be lucky to still have Kamara in the fold. But instead, he's a captain wearing orange.
Agreed. Sometimes it just isn't a good fit and in this case it might very well just be a bad offensive style
However more times than not it turns out kids just aren't productive winning football players especially when they leave programs that aren't winning
If you think the kid is starter material, it's a no brainer. If he's just midrange depth, or a body, I say pass and save the spot for a HS kid with more time to play. In this case, I'm honestly not sure. He's talented, but so are our WRs on campus. Adding Williams, and Byrd as slot guys last year and Jones thus far this year, it depends on where Newsome fits in that group. Is there a better HS slot guy out there that makes more sense long term?
Even if the school releases him, he still has to sit a year, unless he can file a hardship transfer to be closer to home or a family member, or if he has graduated. If a school does not release him, he cannot even be on scholarship anywhere that year he is sitting out. If they do release him, he has to sit, but he can be on scholarship.
Also Kamara went to juco in between.
Not sure why that matters really. All JUCO did for Kamara was put miles on the tires and expose him to potential injury. If you think a kid has talent and can play, then you take him regardless of what his stats were as a FR at another school. Texas passing game was awful; certainly worse than ours. Tennessee would have taken Kamara, JUCO or not, and if they believe Newsome can play (and I'll assume they do since they were pushing for his signature just 17 months ago), they'll do the same with him.
People act like we have proven depth at WR right now and that taking this guy is just taking an empty body. WR is one of our biggest question marks. We all hope that P. Willy turns out to be the stud we believe he can be, but other than that it's a giant question mark.
Josh Smith is a solid returning senior who will play a big role this year, but he will be gone soon. Malone has a lot of talent to be a star and has a lot of room to grow, but he has dropped some huge passes. Then, we have a plethora of Freshmen that could play huge roles but it's impossible to say whether they will become studs or just a warm body. I don't mean this in a negative way, I just believe that our WR corp is such an unknown entity that you take depth and talent wherever you can get it.
Newsome has a lot of interest from great schools. I don't think talent was the reason for transfer like some suggest. Some situations just aren't good for a guy. It's a pity he would have to sit out a year though. He could help us right away.
Tennessee - Tennessee is on me hard; theyre all on me there. Coach Butch (Jones), hes just a great guy. I officially visited Tennessee but my parents never went up there. Now, they said theyll go see it. But Darren Kirkland and Khalil (McKenzie) are on me hard; they all want me there. The Tennessee fans are going crazy.
Too bad he isn't from Tennessee then you would be all in on him too.
