It would be nice if someone told all the 4-5* recruits committed elsewhere it's too early to commit and they should all wait to see how the season plays out. It might be beneficial to us in a big way.

I could craft a similarly smarmy, passive aggressive response back to your statement, but I'll respond a little more maturely. You've obviously not been following recruiting for long if you think players' committing elsewhere in July matters. Things change, a lot. The commit lost for any given school in July ends up being VERY different in February every year. Are you really of the opinion that we can't land any top recruits because they're all committed elsewhere in July? Do you not remember Tee being committed to us early? You see how that worked for us?

Not impossible by any means. We've done it and have had it done to us. But it is ALOT tougher to flip a kid who is committed.

It's really not when you're in the position we're in, especially with an amazing season. And conversely, we could have the #1 class right now and it would mean squat if we didn't have a good season.

Obviously I'd much rather see a very strong class, maybe top 5-6 today and deal with the fallout later if the season fell apart.

The most glaring thing to me is having 18 3* commitments in July. * aren't everything, but I'm not blind either.

Alright I have done some research. Let's look at who we had committed to Tennessee exactly a year ago today.

As of July 20th 2015, we had the following 13 recruits committed, taken from Rivals:

Devante Brooks TE (4 Star)

Jeff George WR (4 Star)

Jarrett Guarantano QB (4 Star)

*Timothy Hart LB (3 Star)

Corey Henderson ATH (3 Star)

Alexis Johnson DT (4 Star)

Ryan Johnson OL (4 Star)

*TaDarryl Marshall ATH (3 Star)

*Chidi Okonya DE (3 Star)

Marquill Osborne DB (4 Star)

Austin Pope TE (3 Star)

Daniel Bituli LB (4 Star)

Decent looking ratio of 4* to 3*.

We have 4 4*s on Rivals right now, but both Crosby and Fant were dropped down to 3*s, IIRC.

Decent looking ratio of 4* to 3*.

You like numbers don't you? We dropped 4 of 6 of those 3 stars from this time last year so 66%. We currently have 17 committed that are 3 stars so 66% of that is about 11. Let's say maybe 4 of our current 3 stars get bumped to 4 stars by signing day that leaves only 7 more 3 stars we need to replace with 4 stars then we will all be happy

How many last year got bumped up? Lately it seems we have more get bumped down than up.

Nice job, Cat. A few quick notes regarding that list-

*Many on here acknowledge that Butch & Co are often the first staff to find many recruits. Yet some of those same people are the ones who complain that we shouldn't take an unproven kid like that so early in the process. Well this staff has set a trend the past few years of taking a kid they deem to have a lot of potential early, and if they at least continue to show that potential in their senior seasons, then we see those guys in orange on NSD. If they don't play up to what the staff expects, the staff will move on from them (the case for at least 3 of those 4 on that list). And a few months after NSD, the only ones whining and bashing the staff for cutting ties with a few commits are a few select people on boards like these that can't think of something else to talk about. No national writers are trying to make a story anymore about Butch cutting a few guys loose to get better guys. Probably because the Vols aren't the only ones that do it. Move on. Find another talking point. Or we'll get Butch to drop you and add someone that can contribute to this board.

*For the most part, the rankings associated with that list is what those players' star ratings ended up as on NSD (Brooks lost a star due to injury). So for those who are hoping half of our class gets bumped up a star or two, it's entirely possible that won't happen.

*While we all like to follow recruiting and rankings and stars and ratings, this staff has it's own recruiting board and profiles they look for. Personally, when I look at the 20 commits we currently have, I can't find more than 4 or 5 I personally disagree with. And I readily admit that I was wrong about Chance Hall and John Kelly, so what do I know. As for all the star-gazing whiners here, you are entitled to your opinion, but you should probably sit out for a bit if you want to get rid of Labruzza, P-Fant, Bennett, Jackson, Henderson, Bumphus, and there's more current 3 stars you can make the case for. These are good players that this staff seems very excited to add to the fold. Even if the recruiting services think they're only worth 3*. Of course the staff would like to add a few 5* guys like Higgins, Akers or Gibbs, but I'd be willing to bet it's more because they've evaluated those guys as great players that would make this team better, and not because some nerds for these recruiting sites that never played the game think they've got an unfailing eye for talent.

*All that to say, you can question in-game decisions, play-calling, or all the coach-speak that puts us all to sleep every press conference, but if there's one thing that Butch & staff have proven they're good at, it's recruiting. About 6 months til NSD. After what we all hope to be a good season this fall, it should be a fun few months watching more elite talent want to join Rocky Top. GBO.

I wanted to see where the talent level was with this team and how that has flipped from just a few years ago. Using only the current roster and ONLY the 247 ranking I came up with the following:

Tennessee has (1) Five Star, (37) Four Stars, and (37) Three Stars.

Included in the three stars for instance is First Team Cam Sutton, Jason Roberson, Chance Hall, Boulware, Ethan Wolfe, etc.

I think its pretty clear this staff has shown the ability to get highly ranked guys and guys that should have been more highly ranked. Its either that or this staff is really good at developing talent once on campus. Its the reason we are in position to compete for the SEC.

If my numbers are off please feel free to correct me.

Your 5* number is pretty off by my recollection. We have three of them on the DL alone-- Philips, McKenzie, and Kongbo.

Basically if this class is > or = to 2013 then next year we are more talented than this year minus attrition or early exits what have you. We're good for a while, deep talented roster. F it enjoy not being cellar dwellers anymore.

Phillips was the highest rated 4* in his class and Kongbo was a 4*, idk if 247 ever gives out 5*'s to Juco.

Feel like Jovon had a fifth star.

Also pretty clear that Kongbo is a different dude than he was as a recruit. Retained speed with a bigger frame, may be able to play inside or out on the line. That's a super valuable recruit.

Not coming at you specifically or anything. Just talking.

Edit: apparently Jovon did not have a fifth star.

Anyone who was thinking our commits were going to get bumps better not look at latest 24/7 rankings.

Personally don't care. Sure it'd be nice to have all 4* and 5* but I'll cheer for whomever comes on board

I'll always cheer for any kid who signs with UT. For the most part, I'll pull for any kid who wanted to be a Vol.
