The real problem with the pass game is PLAYCALLING

Can a 12 year old be charged with Plagiarism? Or do they just ground him, and take away his XBox?

Take away his DVR and block his YouTube access...he'll only be able to watch games once. :)

Hey OP next time could you not plagiarize and list the link where you got all these stats and ideas from so we can give credit to the original author???

Josh Dobbs is the SEC's Best Quarterback on Third Down - Rocky Top Talk

That article was posted on this site a few days ago.

After I read it, I digged more into the numbers on the site. And wrote this thread to discuss its implications in more detail. Specifically from the playcalling pov.

Didn't think I needed to remind you guys this very topic was posted just a few days ago.

D4H,

Completely agree with you about throwing a little more on 1st down. I thought this regularly last year. I also thought the narrative about Dobbs was becoming a little overplayed as I watched supposedly better passers in the cfb do similar things. In many ways dominant receivers played a huge role and the better passers had dominant receivers.

That doesn't mean abandon the run or go to run and shoot (AS MANY seemed to try to imply from your points). It simply means throw a little more on 1st down.

A poster spoke on bama throwing more than us with their really good running back (lol) and most ignored the post completely because it didn't add to their narrative. I read the entire thread and appreciated your analysis. I am also a regular reader on RTT (which I Love) and agree, you did dig a little deeper.

You have taken a ton of personal jabs and stayed classy.
Much respect. Keep posting. Different opinions are needed and appreciated.

To those who went after his stats WITH thoughtful responses (not many)...
Thanks
It made for a great read as you debated back and forth.

This, I could actually see (IF it's determined accuracy has improved this summer/fall).

Those stats show Bama attempted to pass on 1st down 187 times to our 114 / for 1719 completed yds to our mere 707. And who had the Heisman rb?

Along with an improved OL + Receiver Corp + improved accuracy over the summer, this type of re-mix might allow Hurd to pick up some longer runs (fewer runs with => total yrdg).

Great post

On the other hand, it is quite conceivable that Josh’s pass attempts could go up by 2-3 per game without any modifications to playcalling whatsoever. I fully anticipate continued improvement from the offensive line by virtue of additional experience and, collectively, another year in the weight room. If pass protection improves to the point where Josh can stay in the pocket and squeeze off another 2-3 rounds per game on called pass attempts, as opposed to tucking it and running for the first down marker or sideline, that should allow time for more downfield passing routes to develop. As we all know, bad things tend to happen to defensive secondaries when experienced quarterbacks have the time to survey the field.
that's a good point too. just goes back to the whole idea of "complimentary" football.

WR's do a better job of getting open, Line protects and Dobbs delivers.

No doubt that's true. Plus, he'll be a senior and will invent even more ways to bail us out when plays go wrong.

The point is that throwing the ball effectively involves protection, separation and getting the ball out with accuracy. And you can't always playcall your way out of it if you lack any of those 3 things; much less when you're having issues with 2 or 3 of them.

This was about where my head was for this thread. I also hold the stat brought out early on which displayed we ran >70% on first down. Again, promoting we need to throw more does not equate to the straw man some set up where they equate we promote throwing a lot more on first down. Just not true, we do need to keep defenses a little more honest on our first down play selections. IMO this tendency we had last year aided, note for the reading impaired not the sole or primary reason, in a couple of our tough losses when we needed to control possession and clock to win the game. I appreciate this post as I think sometimes we have people jump on D4H for no more reason than he is D4H even when he may have a valid point of view. Our heavy tendency to the point of it almost being a dependency to run on first down last season hurt us at times. We need to be <70% but certainly >50% running the ball on first down this season to give us the best chance of winning IMO.

I say hand Dobbs the keys and watch him make that decision to hand him the keys look like CBJ is a genius. . . the whole offense always knows which plays they execute well. . . Dobbs knows which plays the whole offense feels that way about. . .I look forward to a season of the opposing defense being on its heels enough that we can stuff it down their throats consistently specifically because they have no idea what's coming next.

Jump Highest Vols!!!

D4H, you can now use the girls bathroom since you "identify" with being Dobbs' girlfriend. Your obsession is psychotic and I seriously think you need help. Spend some time on a couch talking to someone.
