Shoop explains what he'd have run vs Florida on 4th down

I'm not going to put words in his mouth, he says what he says. But being thin at tackle and stopping the run cold doesn't add up. Not 4 quarters. When he talks about being more aggressive with pressure, that's reasonable, given his line depth.

"Thin" at DT is a relative term. I'd like to see us have 6-7 to rotate....we'll have 4-5 without the suspended player being reinstated and without any of our bigger DEs sliding down in specific packages. We should be all good with no significant injuries, but you can never have enough DTs. You guys know that better than most given that you've annually had so many studs at that position. We're still another class or 2 away from being optimal there.

Agree. The guy is civil.

Yes he is. I like having fans from other teams on here. You get a lot of perspectives that way.

I'm a UT fan first and foremost, but I am also a fan of College Football. I like hearing about other teams too.

I agree. We have some really good regular posters from other schools....Florida, Kentucky, a couple from Bama. I enjoyed the Oklahoma guys last year too for the most part.

I really do too, and Alabama fans are so simple minded. Actually, it's kind of fun.

If the season goes as the hype train is predicting, every team before Alabama will be underdogs. The two possible exceptions being GA and aTm (away games).

The 1st four teams will absolutely be underdogs (yes, FL included).

If the season goes as the hype train predicts, the Bama game could be a toss up on who is the underdog with a 3-7 pt point spread. Bama won by 5 pts last year...on your home field. Give us 3 pts for home field advantage and it's a two point spread. We have the established QB, you don't. If TN plays to expectations, this season could get really interesting real fast and no one will be being snuck up on. They'll all know we are coming.

Very well said.

These offensives are running the same number of plays that would have taken 5 quarters to accomplish before the hurry up. These days, depth ranks right up there will talent.

Bob Shoop explains what he would have run on 4th down against Florida

Part of the article.....

"It’s a play that will stick with Tennessee fans for a while. How would new defensive coordinator Bob Shoop have handled it?

4th and 14, less than two minutes to go at the Swamp, ball at the Florida 37-yard line, Tennessee leading by six. Last September, the Vols rushed three with a QB spy and played a deep zone. The result: a 63-yard catch-and-run to give Florida the lead and an 11th straight win over the Vols.

While on The Tony Basillo Show, Shoop explained what he would have done.

“Jalen Reeves-Maybin asked me that question,” Shoop said. “He said, ‘What’s your identity as a coach?’ I said, ‘My identity as a coach is, 4th down, game on the line, I’m coming after you."

(Edit: Thanks to whichever Mod moved this)

He stated what 9/10 coaches would have done. Unfortunately, we had the 1.

Agree. But we're still likely to have 5, perhaps 6. When we played you guys 2 years ago, we had 2, maybe 3....and one of those guys was a converted linebacker to defensive end to D tackle....by his senior year he had put on an extra 30 lbs (nearly 50 since his freshman year) out of pure necessity because we were so razor thin and needed him to switch to that position.....now we play 2 5-stars, a 4-star, 2 3-stars and hopefully another 4 star if he gets reinstated. Additionally, we bring a 5 star DE JUCO, Jonathan Kongbo, who's jumped from 260 to 280 since December and might wind up sliding down (just my speculation).

Haha. Yeah. Honestly, what would anyone expect though.....we were playing Florida (as he shuffles his tarot cards and breaks out his ouija board).

Can't say I remember him much at Penn St and I watched a few games. Not even when Bama played franklin's crew at Vandy. So far, what I've heard, no one in the SEC will be able to run the football on his defense, no one. And he's willing to take a lot of chances on passing downs. Sounds like a risk, reward kind of guy.

The numbers he's put up over the last couple of years show there's been a lot of reward.

Got a couple of good LSU fans on here. A good A&M poster that has been on here forever.

Georgia.....:ermm:.....well....hold on......nope. Can't think of a good Georgia poster.

There's a Clemson poster that is ok, until he starts taking things too personally.

Yeah, the A&M guy is solid. Gonna be hearing a lot from him soon. Lol.

I don't hate A&M. I used to root for them before they joined the SEC, because I hate Texas that much. I've got to say though. I won't mind at all if they suck this year.

He's Eddie Haskell until you poke him a little bit. Then he becomes Tommy from Goodfellas. :)

Me either. Really don't have an opinion, won't hate them at all....until we play them 😁 .

Yep, and when you are ahead and hurrying to go three and out, it really accentuates a lack of depth on defense. Hope Butch and Co have figured that one out.

Your missing context and a lot of give and take. But to fill you on the discussion: It was brought up, can your new D-coordinator get it done?
I said: Stopping all SEC team's running attack? No.

Tenn is going to be aggressive with the blitz:
I paraphrased: Not without a lot of mixed results.

That catch you up?

It certainly did. I appreciate the thoughtful response as well as the appropriate degree of snark. I think I may have cast one too many stones. Reading back through the thread I see that I missed the tone of the give-and-take. Apologies

That being said, I don't think it takes 6 all-SEC Dlineman rotating through to stop the run if you have a talented secondary and a sharp coach. I politely disagree with you.

Gonna be hard sneaking up on folks blowing that trumpet.

tusktimes you're going to get several yrs of fustration shoved up your arse on 10/15/16. You know it and realize it so don't be skeert. With undermanned teams the past 2 yrs we took you to the end. Bama and the Gators know we had you on your on turf but our young team let you off. UT is coming back and you can't stand it. Little nicky and I mean that in any way you want to take it knows Big Orange Nation is on the rise. Look for him to sneak out of town with kiffy and leave you hanging. CBJ and staff are waiting to smoke those winning cigars. Bama's run is coming to an end. Don't be afraid of it, just face it. Those days of not so long ago are coming back to you. (Early 2000's, 90's) You remember days of Mike Price, wait he didn't even get to coach, Mike Shula, Bill Curry, Joe Kines, Ray Perkins. Is your stomach hurting thinking about that time. Now you know what our recent frustration has been like. Remember losing to Louisiana Monroe 21-14 in 2007? It's the ebb and flow of the college football game and world we live in. You've had a good run since 2008 but it's time to move over and let the BIG Dog (Smokey) eat.

Have a good night and quit trolling this site.
