Hurd is in the top 3 as an RB at UT if he does as well as he did last season. He could end up the best. JMO FWIW.
He needs to do better than last season to be top 5, and I think he can and should.

Some people need to look at the history we've had at RB here before they give out top 3 and top 5 credentials so easily. Chuck Webb, Reggie Cobb, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Travis Stephens, James Stewart, Charlie Garner, etc., not even mentioning guys like Hardesty, Foster, etc. It's a stacked list.

I think that's more of a wrinkle in this offense so it fell under the plays they weren't showing

Yea I agree although it's already on tape with the bowl game for opponents to prepare for. I guess I am hoping it's used more than just as an occasional wrinkle

I haven't watched the spring game yet and have a question

Was the QB under center any?

If so how much?

None in the spring game that I can remember but they have been working on it quite a bit this spring. I'd bet we're going to see more of it than we have the past 3 years.

I think we're in on some good backs right now, but I'm not sure we're in on any good enough to overcome Kelly by 2017. Especially with the way Butch has shown deference to older, more experienced players. Personally, I don't see any Nick Chubbs, Jalen Hurds, or Leonard Fournettes in the 2017 recruiting class.

If we land Akers and Chandler, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kelly end up with a more equitable share of the carries with one of those guys or CFA than we've seen over the past few years. But if he's healthy that spot is his to lose.

I agree. I don't like the little bit of tape I've seen on Akers and Chandler. Not saying they're bad players. I'd gladly take either one. I just don't see the same level of talent as those freaks from the 2014 recruiting class.

I think 2018 might have more big time RBs available.

I seriously wasn't expecting Kelly to be this good as an underclassman third stringer. Talk about your diamond in the rough.

He doesn't have the star power just yet, which will definitely help RB recruiting over the next year or so.

We talk about Butch's recruiting strengths and gameday weaknesses, but something that's being completely ignored in that argument is player development. For every 5* showing out, we've got another 3* that's playing like a 5*. That demands credit.

Without a doubt. Beyond recruiting, Butch Jones and this staff have been phenomenal at spotting under the radar talent and developing it.

Everytime I look at the 2015 class I'm surprised by the lack of misses. Almost everyone in that class looks to be a contributor. Tons of future studs as well. We might look back at that group in 5 years as the best class in program history from top to bottom.

4* Texas A&M quarterback "commit" Tate Martell posted on Twitter that as of now he is committed to A&M but wants to take all of his officials. He listed some schools that he wants to see and wants an offer from and Tennessee was one of them. 2017 class.

Just doing what A&M QBs do. He's just getting an early start on it.

OU was on defense too although I do understand why they broke down a bit. That said, any time an offense goes up by that much defense should be able to hold on. We couldn't early in the season but post-UGA (and in some spots before then the defense starting playing very well).

At Bama, the defense was lights out and kept us in it. They also saved the day against SC.

Nah the Oklahoma game we left the defense on the field to dry. The coaches really need ALL the blame that game. Not putting Sutton on Shepard when they clearly we're going to him every 3rd down and even down on the goalline. Jumper in the game period. Not running the ball to the edge where we were killing them. Everything was wrong that game. Running the same plays over and over again.

Agree with this. Hurd is a monster, but saying he has work to do to crack the top 5 is no insult. It just reflects how much talent we've had at the position in the past.

We essentially traded a 4 star in Kendall Bussey for 3 star Kelly. Harbaugh did everything short of a personal satellite camp to flip him. There's something there. :matrix:

Agree.

I like both and understand why Bussey flipped. Coming off knee surgery and a RS understand he looks good, Ford too

FWIW 247 had both 3 stars with Kelly the slightly higher grade

I wouldn't hold your breathe on it being any more than an occasional change up.

I'd probably put him in 4th on that list (which is basically, all the backs I've watched play). I'd take Webb, Garner, or Lewis over him. I'd probably put him at the top of the next group with Henry, Stephens, Cobb, and Stewart.

That's just backs in the last 30 years. I'm sure there are other backs if you go back farther. If he stays healthy though he's about to break all of their records.

Hoping you are wrong. We were dang effective with it in the bowl game.

It was something like 8 or 9 plays with every singles play except for 1 being an 8 yard run or longer

Was it that often? I only remember I think 3. But yes, I hope it is mixed in frequently. It really brings out/showcases Jalen Hurd's skillset.

I lost it when sutton wasn't on Shepard at the end. I get not following him every play but he has to be there in winning time. Has to be.
