After rewatching highlights and bits and pieces of games from 2015 over the past few weeks, I think the most underappreciated and in many ways impressive win of Butch's career may be the Missouri game.
Yeah, their offense was completely inept, but that was a game where Tennessee easily could have lost 9-6 or 12-9 or something equally disgusting. Mizzou, a team with a 3-game win streak against UT and a great defense, was playing for a bowl and their cancer-stricken coach. In the cold in Columbia. At night.
But the game plan that the coaches took to Columbia was perfect. They knew that 14-17 points was enough to win it, and while it's great to have a solid plan, the team still has to be able to execute. And that's where that game is so impressive--the Vols imposed their will on Missouri all night. Pinkel waved the white flag by punting late in the game with favorable down and distance just to get it over with because he saw how badly the Vols were beating the Tigers in the trenches.
Hurd breaking off run after run to kill the clock and seal the victory was so satisfying to watch. The Vols haven't done that in YEARS against a good defense, but we've seen it happen to us over and over and over again. Think about all the UF, UGA, etc., games where the score was at least somewhat close, but the clock was moving at an alarming pace and we just couldn't get their offense off the field. Such a helpless feeling as a fan, but the Vols were finally able to turn the tables.
That's how Alabama almost never falls victim to upsets under Saban, even though they frequently win games that look close on paper. They just maul teams late in the game and preserve small leads by not making mistakes, forcing quick 3 and outs, and pounding the rock.
I think that Butch and DeBord can be extremely successful here if they can continue to field offenses that are capable of scoring a lot of points very fast when needed (UGA 2015) and capable of slowing things down and controlling time of possession and field position (Missouri 2015) in low-scoring games.
