Tennessee student-athlete Brian Randolph has been named a semifinalist for the 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award by Diverse magazine.
The Sport Scholars Awards were established in the name of Ashe in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis legend who sought to expand opportunities for young people during his life.
The semifinalists were chosen from more than 1,000 outstanding minority student-athletes nominated by their respective institutions. To be nominated, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Randolph is one of just three football players among the 15 semifinalists for the mens award and one of two representatives from the Southeastern Conference. The senior was a four-time selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. On the field, Randolph started all 13 games in 2015 at free safety, made 70 tackles, had two interceptions and a forced fumble. He became all-time career games leader in Vol history by playing in his 53rd game in Outback Bowl win over Northwestern.
The winners will be profiled in the April 21, 2016, edition of Diverse. Tennessee legend Kara Lawson was honored as the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar in 2003.
