2017 will be even crazier. With only 12 or so seniors, plus maybe 5-7 guys that could leave early for the draft next season, we'll have to have some serious attrition again next offseason to even get to 25.

Would make sense then for us to blueshirt as many as possible this year

Yeah, it's going to be crazy. People who get queasy about "roster management" aren't going to be happy.

If we live up to expectations next season, there should be a TON of elite talent around the nation wanting to be a part. That's why this staff wants to keep as much room as possible for next year's class. It should be a top 5 class.

Renfro was a walk-on and graduated this year, right? If so, he wouldn't have counted against the 85 or 25. If he was awarded a scholarship, he would have been forward-counted to 2016.

We don't want to forward-count to 2017, because that's going to be a top class and we'll be in a position to make a great haul-- maybe one of our best classes ever. I really think we'll try to reconcile the numbers this year to allow the full allotment (or oversigning) next year. We won't turn away 5* players when we have 3* commits that aren't EE. Reality of recruiting.

The first article is a compliance document from TXA&M. It specifically mentions transfers counting towards a given class.

The second article near the end mentions two transfer rbs at A&M and how the could've counted towards either class.

The third is about intial counters at USC due to their sanctions and lists transfer RB Silas Redd.

Nice detective work. Sounds like RDA did count. Looks like 3 spots without any shirting anyone. That would also put us at 85 scholarships total with Stocstill counting and Blair and Bullock leaving.

Maybe they could get around it with this? From the NCAA handbook:

"15.02.4.4 Exempted Institutional Financial Aid. The following institutional financial aid is exempt and
is not counted in determining the institution’s financial aid limitations: (b) A postgraduate scholarship awarded by an institution in accordance with Bylaw 16.1.4.1.1;

16.1.4.1.1 Senior Scholar-Athlete Award. [A] An institution may provide a maximum of two senior
scholar-athlete awards each year to graduating seniors. The award may consist of a tangible item valued
at not more than $175 and a postgraduate scholarship not to exceed $10,000."



I didn't think a graduate transfer counted as an initial either.

Less 2 who left (Oliver and Bruce)

Less 1 who didn't come yet (Stewart)

Less 1 who was initial counter and went on medical (Swagford)

The number is 22. Now Stewart could be one of those or he could blue shirt.

Say we reach the 85 Scholarships this year, 12 seniors leave, 5 players leave early and lets say 1-2 players transfer or leave for some unknown reason (mary jane, bb guns, etc..). We are only looking at a maximum of 18-19 scholarships for 2017?? That does not sound very good for the "best class in quite some time" scenario.

Edited: Not trying to be a Negavol here.. Was a serious inquiry and was looking at a worst case scenario.

FTR, Swafford was not a blueshirt. He was basically a grey shirt who walked on in the fall instead of waiting for the Spring.

"15.5.1.4 Cancellation of Aid. Once an individual becomes a counter in a head-count sport (see Bylaws
15.5.2, 15.5.4, 15.5.5, 15.5.6, 15.5.7 and 15.5.8), the individual normally continues as a counter for the remainder
of the academic year. However, if he or she voluntarily withdraws from the team prior to the first day of
classes or before the first contest of the season (whichever is earlier) and releases the institution from its obligation
to provide financial aid, the individual no longer would be considered a counter (see Bylaws 15.5.2.2 and
15.5.6.4.1)."
