'16 AZ DE Jonathan Kongbo UT Signee 2/3/16

Not all players make immediate impacts. I expected Vereen to be a good player for us. He was highly touted in Butch's first (year 0) class. It looks like his bulb turned on in the Bama game and he kicked @ss for us the rest the year! He will be an impact player next year and I think he'll quietly find himself in the league ala Malik Jackson.

Kongbo's contribution would be felt more in 2017 IMO. I love what we have with Barnett, Vereen, and Phillips. Not real sure I agree with this Vereen talk on here. He was arguably our best DE 2nd half of year. Kid played lights out. Quick, disciplined. Seems like a little star gazing to me but to minimize his impact is selling this kid short.

Which is exactly why we need. 2017 will be tough

Are people actually debating whether or not we should take this guy if he wants to come? Hell yeah we take him. Talented players can always find a place in the rotation. And if you're worried about other players developing, competition drives development. If you don't like your spot in the rotation, fight to get a better one. Besides, Shoop can probably maximize each players skill set and set up defenses designed to draw on their strengths. If Kongbo is willing to recommit, we should absolutely take him and be damn happy about it.

This thread is laughable. Are we seriously contemplating whether or not this young man is a take or if he can make an impact?

In today's landscape, effecting the qb is only behind having a franchise qb and potentially protecting the qb.

Being that recruiting, as we all are aware, is an inexact science what better way to increase your odds for success than actively "flooding " positions with talent?.

If you're wrong, it only costs you a scholarship, if you're right you end up with a defensive line like Alabama had this past football season or LSU has had in the recent past.

Competition brings out the best in any competitor and adding Mr.Kongbo does that. I'm sure that Lewis, Taylor, Barnett, Phillips, etc...are not worried about it.

No one said we shouldn't take the kid.

I said if he is a one and done then we might be worse off in 2017 because him being on the roster will take away developmental reps for Phillips and/or Taylor

His recruitment is recruiting over those 2 IMO

^^ The correct answer...

Barnett will take reps away too.....

Huh?

He's already on the roster.

IMO if this kid comes it's him/Barnett/vereen/Lewis in the 2 deep.

All kids that could be gone in 2017.

The only point I am making is if we don't get this kid we perhaps are more prepared for 2017 because Taylor and Phillips get more reps. If they don't get reps next year I doubt both would even stick around for 2017

For this reason this recruit doesn't move the needle for me

Misread your OP.

If they don't, they don't. Can't worry about that.

We are planning for the 2016 football season, therefore, this recruit is important. If 2016 turns out the way many of us hope, then winning, especially if it includes championships, will take care of everything, including those who are here for the 2017 season. Phillips and Taylor aren't going anywhere.

Agreed about 16 but the question has to be asked how much better does this kid make us in 16. I am not sure it's as much as this board seems to think. I have supreme confidence in the guys we already have

As far as Phillips goes hubbs has said we are still "recruiting" him. At the very least it's worth following

What happened when Maggit went down this year? Depth is a huge need.

I'm assuming that KP is enrolled in spring classes. If he can't see a future for himself after spring practice and wants to take his ball and go home, how dumb would your "we don't need Kongbo because he may hurt KP's development" take be?

I mean what if this guy is a one and done first rounder? This is so dumb. I can't believe I'm typing why we need a 5* defensive end.

Bama and FSU want this kid and I guarantee you they aren't sitting around worrying about who's feelings it may hurt.

Also, nobody wants to talk about it, but Phillips hasn't played an entire season of healthy football in like what, 3 years?

If we get a chance to add a stud, we add him. Whether or not he'll take time from other guys.

I want to add him but there is often times a negative to recruiting on top of talented guys. We need to be prepared for that if it happens

If you want to play with the big boys then you need to recruit like them.

Do you think Bama misses AK?

Nope I don't but they didn't miss a beat in recruiting like we are this class.

Again I am not saying we don't take him at all. I just wish he was a 5star HS kid to be honest

I thought Kongbo has 3 to play 3. Is that correct? JMO, but I see it as no different than Barnett, who will most likely be 3 for 3.

I personally feel the answer is always 3 years for even HS players, since most need a year to get ready and will only play minor sub roles now if they play as freshmen since the roster is rebuilt. The studs will play 3 and are subject to early out for the draft. If it is 2 year JUCO's, they better be outstanding and fill an immediate need or I would pass.

What's negative? If KP doesn't like where he fits in the rotation, he can work harder to improve his lot. You speak as if it should just be handed to him instead of him earning it. No question he has talent, but does he have the drive?
