Vols and Jancek part ways! (official)

Did UT Treat Jancek Unfairly?

I sense that Butch is too much of a loyalty guy for it to be that simple.

Exactly. In fact, I've been surprised at how reluctant VN has been to speculate on off field reasons for the firing. I thought this group loved a good scandal. Real or imaginary.

In all seriousness, though, given how Jancek spent all last night with a apparently a bottle and definitely a Twitter account, the firing had to be a sudden surprise. It just seems like there must be some other reason out there that we don't know.

Jones likes 'his' people around them. Obviously CJJ was one of those people. It has to be an issue they are not going to let out besides coaching. If it is off the field issues then you still have to protect your people because they do have families!

Swain said this morning that the primary issue(s) for letting CJJ go had more to do with things off the field. Said at one point, "you have to be able to get along with your headcoach".

Dunno. I'm not really buying that it was off the field. I recently read that if you're friends with someone for something like 7 years, you're friends for lifetime. Jancek followed Jones to 2 different schools and has been under him that long. Why would they all of a sudden not be able to get along?

The defense got worse this year (yards per play) with better personnel/experience on that side of the ball along with weaker opposing offenses on the schedule.

I don't think it was an easy decision, but I think it was football related. They probably butted heads about defensive strategies, Jancek ultimately decided how to call it, and it cost us games. It cost us the Florida and OK games and nearly cost us GA and SC as well. Jancek was a fine coach, and I'm all for consistency if he were retained, but this is an opportunity for an upgrade IMO.

Neither loss was on Jancek. For OK, our offense ran up tempo and failed to move the ball. Our D was on the field for far to long. The Big 12 officiating crew blew a big call as well. For Florida, Butch called a time out before the 4th down. Even McElwain said he decided to go for it after CBJ called the TO. This has to be related to off the field issues that hopefully remain private.

I thought UF converted more than one 4th down? I thought it was three.

Some of us were chastised for saying Jones would have to part ways with Bajakian and Jancek

When "some" throw enough crap against wall, some will tend to stick. Believe me, "some" have been slinging crap for a couple of years around here.

I bet the same "some" were also saying UT should part ways with Butch....that's not looking like sticky crap right now.

agreed....something is up, CJJ was doing a good job and deserved a raise not be fired

No, the same "some" did not suggest this. They suggested that if he remained loyal to dead bait assistants, it would be his downfall.

I don't know how the relationship was behind the scenes but there is no doubt that he improved our defense and I think the man was underpaid. He made 500k which was 65th among NCAA FBS DCs.

HELL NOOOOOO!!

don't need no more 3rd and chavis around here

He did pretty good for himself and LSU is sort of known as a premier defensive school because of him. I bet A&M is mighty satisfied as well. Not sure why that 3rd and Chavis cliche resonates despite the man is a true icon in the arena of D Coordinators.

I don't know about doing him wrong, but all I've heard for 3 years from so many on this board is tht Butch needs to not be so loyal to his friends and hire the best possible staff for Tennessee. And well now that it seems he's actually doin that all I hear is how he's doin said coaches wrong and this is gonna e his downfall etc etc etc......so te real question is......what exactly do people really want? Me personally...I think some just have to have something to fuss n complain about. But hey that's just my opinion.

True...circular argument. :loco:

Something had to have gone really bad. Jancek,Strip and Mahoney were pretty much a package deal. All (include Lawson in there) were packing their bags for Knoxville when Butch became official.

There's one rumor going around regarding Jancek that just seems ridiculous as it was presented IMO. Swain just kinda said that Jones and Jancek weren't "getting along" without offering the reason(s) why. Not sure we'll ever know, but considering what you wrote in your post which was very true, I found it almost hard to believe that the relationship went so badly wrong that Jones had to fire him...but that appears to have happened here.

The bottom line is this:

1. Offense gave significant early lead over OU. Defense gave it up late.
2. O gave big, late 4th quarter lead over Fla. D coughed it up late.
3. O and special teams gave significant early lead over Arky. D couldn't stop them at all after 1st quarter.
4. O came back for lead over Ga in 4th quarter. Only a dropped pass and time running out saved the D late.
5. O gave big lead over SCar. Only a strip fumble save the D late.
6. O gave late lead over Bama. D immediately gave it back.

There were some problems on O in most of those games, too, but the D ultimately gave it up too many times. CJJ's D plays well early, but it is as if he cannot react to adjustments, and instead goes into a prevent zone, which leads to bad results late in games.

I agree improve when you can..but we really seemed to be close..and now we have some uncertainty...Sunseri looked like a really good hire and it was a disaster...Muschamp didn't do well at Auburn this year
