Comcast here, been good so far but waiting on the honeymoon to end. Most folks in my area seem to love TDS but I didnt know that until after I signed up with Comcast.

Alright folks...I seriously appreciate all the information/advice. I don't have access to U-Verse or I would probably give it a try. And, the fastest HS internet available to me is 100 MBPS for $75 per month. But I'm probably going to go with a 50 MBPS plan that is $47 per month (since this whole switch is about saving some $$). Pretty sure I'll go with DirecTV...I like their packages better and it looked like some of the key channels that my family would watch are in SD on Dish.

You'll be missing out with the Hopper DVR...it is the best thing I've ever had for TV.

Yes. Unless something has changed, HD is another thing Dish has over Direct. One flat fee got me HD on up to 3 TV's with Dish. With direct, there was a fee for each TV I wanted HD. It cost just as much to get HD on one TV with Direct as it did 3 TV's with Dish.

I've talked to a few people in my neighborhood that have DirecTV, and they said they couldn't remember the last time their service went out because of weather...and it get's pretty windy in our area.

I installed both for 5 years. Going out won't be an issue if the man has a competent meter such as a super buddy. Go with dish, same thing but cheaper. I switch every 2 years due to cheaper 1st year prices. Buy a 1.66 fence pole at lowes for 11 bucks and a red bag of quick set concrete. Request a pole mount in the ground, much more secure and steadier reception. Will only go out in extremely hard rain and only for a few seconds. Never never penetrate your roof. Don't do it. If your installer does not have the materials for a pole mount give him what you bought at lowes. If you go with direct you will need a 2 inch Outside diameter pole which is very hard to find. Common 2 inch ID is too big

Oh, I thought that the Genie was on par with the Hopper (i.e. can watch recorded shows from any connected TV, etc.). Am I wrong about that?

Also, see the snip below from Dish's website. For any of the "dots" that don't say "HD", I assumed it meant those were SD (so, in my picture below, DisneyXD and DisneyJr look like they are SD to me). Let me know if I'm missing something.

Is Dish still worth it considering all that?

NFL red zone is the shat, it's exciting the whole day, if something big happens you're going to see it, and u don't spend half the day watching commercials. Sports pack is well worth it

Yeah, I had Red Zone with Charter and it is really good. DirectTV is offering Sunday Ticket (which, I assume, includes Red Zone) free for the rest of this season and all of next season.

Plus with Dish I got free year of Netflix which I have thoroughly enjoyed!! As mentioned Hopper is awesome.

So, do you not need a "box" at each TV? I was under the impression with both services that I'd need, for instance, a Joey at each TV. Is that only if I want to watch recorded shows at the TV (i.e. I woudn't need a box at a TV if I just wanted to watch live programming)? Does it work that way with both Dish and DirecTV?

This. I made the switch to U-Verse and have been very pleased with it. The user interface is on a different level than Charter or Direct TV.

I'm currently in the middle of getting totally hosed by AT&T U-Verse. Love the interface and everything about it, but my bills are spiraling out of control. I've been downgrading my package but they always seem to find extra charges to throw in.

Seriously considering the Sling option mentioned above. My brother is a die-hard believer in internet based TV - he hasn't had cable, etc. for years and saves $50+ a month relative to what I'm paying all in.

I'm tired of the foolishness.

If you talk to the right person dish will match all of that. Your interest is savings. Go with 50mb internet that is plenty. One of the guys on here that is a dish cx will give you a referral and you can apply that to your bill. You could save money by buying your hopper and Joeys outright on eBay or Amazon and avoid renting them, track down a dish installer and pay him 75 to install it on your pole, then call and activate. Prob be easier to work with Dish directly tho. It will save you about 250 per year on avg as opposed to direct. There is no difference at all except for NFL Sunday ticket but NFL red zone is better anyway. You are literally having it channel flip for you to the most interesting parts of every game with no commercials

Yeah, I do the same. My 2 years are about up, getting ready to switch back to Direct TV again. Pretty much the same programming, overall Dish is cheaper, I think (in the second year).. We've had a some rain issues at times, but I like it a thousand times more than cable.

If you can get your lady to put it in her name and you can keep dish but get all new equipment. I get divorced every 2 years according to dish, mail my receivers back after installer adds new. Just give him 10 bucks and tell him what you're doing, he'll be relieved. Just switch out some receivers and repoint. 30 minutes

Sto, since you used to install Dish, I have a question. I've had it for 10 years and just recently upgraded to the Hopper. I'm only getting about 1/2 the HD channels I should be, even though the pkg I pay for covers them. Is there something I can do before contacting Dish?

I'm not 100% sure. It might be some kind of package. Virtually every channel on dish is Hd now save for a few like ESPNU. Restrictions on those are about to expire and soon they will be HD I'm told. I've been out of the loop for a few years but still have my 750 dollar meter. All my friends call me day and night to fix their shat. I hooked up a dudes surround sound the other night. Didn't even know what he had. Just told him to buy a digital audio optical, went over and got him going. Some of those channels you see are simply not offered in Hd but you can unintentionally hide them by pushing guide too many times. I'd call and ask if I had the maximum number of HD channels in my package. I've got top 250 HBO and showtime and sports pack 159 month

I have been wondering if sling would work for me. We want to give it a try. Have had dish for years. And I like them but they have gotten too high

Sam, I call and cancel my dish every 6 months. They cut it in half. Initially, it went up to 78 bucks. I called to cancel. They offered 10 off, then 20 off. I said no, still too high. Right at the point when they were going to make it final, they said what about 40 off? I took the deal. Have called to cancel twice since then, and they have extended for six months both times. I was really serious about cancelling though.

It takes some getting used to. I still miss my DVR. I used to record almost every game (especially the basketball games) and watch it later so I could FF through commercials. That luxury is gone at this point. But I like my bill a whole lot more. Most importantly, I don't feel trapped paying way too much for a million channels I don't watch.

There's a few channels I wish I had, like NFL Network. But as far as TV goes, the combination of Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix lets me watch almost any show or movie I want.
