Butch says it takes 6 to 7 years to build a program in the SEC

Look at miles at OKState. Never won 10 games. Look at Saban at MSU, never won 10 games. Both are amazing coaches. But they didn't have enough time to build a good program.

We literally already talked about this, and you still don't understand that Tennessee and Oklahoma State/Michigan State are very different.

Not really, CBJ has had to completely rebuild us. Both those great coaches(and so many others) couldnt do it in 5 years but they went on to be very good coaches. You said earlier(if you don't get it done by year 3-4 it's not gonna happen). Well, guess what. I've already proved you wrong. G'day, sir.

Stop changing your story lol. One comment it's year 3, one it's year 4, now it's year 5... You're hilarious

It's because you've never said what "building a program" actually means. But under any definition, the idea that it takes 6 or 7 years for a coach that's actually going to win something is ludicrous.

Then please, tell me why Saban(top 3 coach of this era) couldn't do it in 5 at MSU? He didn't win a natty till his 10th year of coaching!

I've said this before, but I think it's funny that Tennessee fans are so willing to put our program down and act like it's equivalent to Oklahoma State or South Carolina just to make Butch look better. Are you a fan of Tennessee or a fan of Butch?

So we should've fired Johnny Majors in 1981?

Or 80? Or 82?

I'm sorry I'm not a fan that still lives in the 90's thinking we were a top 5 or even top 10 program before CBJ took over.

Hmmm, then why did danontio win 9 his second year and 11 year 4? And a conference title

Because he's a very good coach. But wait, are you disagreeing? You think Michigan State, which when Saban was there hadn't won 10 games since 1965, is equivalent to LSU and Tennessee and Alabama?

This is my point. I don't understand how people think this.

Oh, and Mike Gundy had a great year this season at OKState. And won 9+ in his 4th year and contended for their conference title.

there have been a lot of elite programs throughout the history of college football that has gone through long periods of struggles. the same programs have years of successes and being competitive. In general, the non-championship runs are far greater than the championships.

Tennessee went from 1969 until 1985 between conference championships.

Tennessee is working on another streak of non-championships since the last one in 1998.

Natty's are much harder to get..

its hard to make a valid argument for how long it might take to "turn a program around". How bad was it when coach X took over?

It took Majors 9 years to be competitive in an SEC that was far weaker than the one today.

Jones wins the East next year and he will be anointed by Tennessee fans as a savior. he goes 8-4 again (not out of the realm of possibilities) and many will question why Hart gave him the raise this year.

no one can predict when we will get there which is why I have pooh poohed those that have said 2016 from the beginning of Butch's start. Lot of things have to go right for it to happen. If one is expecting an East crown in 2016, the chances are better they will be disappointed than elated at results.

Just hang loose for the ride folks. Championships are always better when not expected..

So dantonio can turn them around in 4 years. But Saban can't. Why?

So our "storied history" is only the 90's?

How old are you? 18?

It took Majors 9 years to rebuild Tennessee.

Our history has always been there, but it's much easier to rebuild a major program quickly now. See: every national championship coach since Spurrier.

Nope, look at all the coaches that failed at elite programs. Or had 1 or 2 good seasons and then sucked.

How many of those took over programs averaging <=6 wins per season for >=4 yrs?

How many followed a train wreck like Dooley?

You seem incapable or unwilling to be objective.

"Lower your expectations, so you won't be disappointed." When do the expectations ramp up? Or do we just keep low expectations forever like we're Ole Miss?

Probably because the Big Ten sucked when Dantonio got there, kind of like the SEC East sucks right now.

Lololol, no. They still always had atleast 4 good teams and 2 elite teams. To compare the b10 from 07 to about 11 to the east is hilarious.

I set expectations each year, not four years down the road. this year I expected 7 wins so I'm very happy with 8 and also disappointed because we gave two wins away.

one can be both..
