Finally, Help for Shield-Watkins Field

At this point, I highly doubt it's a problem that can be fixed in one off season. I could be wrong, but I would welcome turf - the new stuff that is.

@JimmyHyams: Bobby Campbell, greenskeeper for natural grass at Neyland Stadium from 1994-2010, was invited to Neyland today to get his opinion on surface

Question is what the hell took so long!?!

Throw seed. And fertilize... Not hard

It can definately be fixed. The turf that is there will continue to develop a root system. They have removed turf and resodded the last numbwr of years and no roots have established. There are a lot of things that can be done to establish a healthy root system. One is prevent winter kill. Aerate earlier in the year and cut it tight. There are also strains of Bermuda that go into Dormancy later. I have one in my yard that is still green. (Yukon) Tifway has been brown for a while now. Go by the Knoxville airport for reference. They have Tifton Bermuda grass farm across the street.

I've heard the Butch wants field turf rumor. Would make sense with his offense, but doesn't explain the problems they're having or why they're resodding every year. Pretty sure that philosophy pre-dates Butch getting the job.

I took a couple of turfgrass classes on the Ag Campus several years ago and I feel like I could do a better job than what is being done now.

Guys I play on field turf pretty often and I can tell you that it is a really great surface to play on and you can't muck it up regardless of the amount of rain. Provided you have proper slope and drainage of course. That being said there is nothing better than ideal conditions on a proper natural surface. The turf gets really hot on hot sunny days too. I wouldn't mind seeing turf but DP has already said turf isn't even on the table for discussion.

Bruin vol. I'm pretty sure they would use detachable cleats for grass, they don't wear down and you can adjust them according to field conditions. For turf molded cleats r good, and for Astro turf there is Astro shoes. So I'm pretty sure they aren't subject to just one pair of shoes. I know I played with both depending on the field or conditions.

With that being said, long cleats your subject to injuries at times cause your foot digs in deeper, but they are needed for wet field conditions.

Thanks for your answers.

The "story" I was told suggested the kids have fallen in love with the molded cleats and don't want to wear anything else and because there isn't a molded cleat with the long cleats they are sticking with the shorter cleat

It's coming from someone that would likely know but it's not coming directly from a player so I was hoping you might know for sure

Just put field turf in and be done with it. It looks better and you can use the field more. The only way to Guarantee a good surface next season is field turf. The players deserve a better field.

A few huge things that are different now than before CBJ is the practice in August for the public, more closed practices than before, and numerous recruiting days during the summer where there is a head coach that expects the surface to be in game shape with paint and all the fixings. That isn't always what is best at that time of the year especially considering the time aeration is done.

That's not accurate. Including the open practice, the team practiced at Neyland 4 times during fall camp, which is the same as the last two years and 3 or 4 times fewer than Fulmer's teams practiced there.

It is true that is more than they did under Dooley, he was not a proponent of practicing on the game field. One season, they only practiced there twice before the opener. But Dooley is the exception, rather than the rule.

For the conspiracy theory fans here you go:

Cbj has behind the scenes launched this crusade because he wants turf and wants the fans upset in order to put pressure on the administration that doesn't want turf.

The field issues are overblown and some of the slipping and sliding is because the new nike shoes actually use a shorter cleat.

Butch would prefer turf, but he understands that is not going to happen here under any circumstances. The issues are not overblown.

Part of my "story" is saying the players aren't allowed to where the cleat they all want. They are wanting to wear a 1/2in cleat but are only allowed to wear a 3/8.

Edit: I confirmed what I was being told. The players prefer a 3/8 molded cleat and we dont have 1/2 molded cleat.

Would love to know to know if that is correct

The players are allowed to use whatever model Nike cleat they prefer. There are varying cleat lengths, but the "speed" cleats that Nike makes for the skill position players only have the shorter 3/8 spikes.

There are other models available with longer or changeable spikes, and some players have begun wearing those. Longer spikes do come with a higher risk of injury, which is why Nike recommends the shorter spike.

You've made (understandably) vague reference to that before. Is that situation a result of major donor(s) preferences?

Bring in someone that knows how to maintain the grass before we jump to the fake crap! Rather have the crappy real grass than fake plastic/rubber stuff.

I hope that Campbell can patch it up to finish the season, and get a huge early jump on getting some new natural grass layed down before the start of next season. I'm just really hoping that Hart doesn't decide to go with field turf!
