Finally, Help for Shield-Watkins Field

Not saying it's a legit excuse but the number of times from June-August where the field is expected to be in gameday shape is being said to hamper things.

It's much more than before under other coaches is the story.

I see your point...and I think it is pretty dumb to paint the field in June.

When UT switched to grass in 1994, they sprigged the field on May 9th. By the end of June it was ready for its 1st mowing. After the 1st mowing they had a full 2 months of letting the field mature before hosting UF in the middle of Sept...the first 2 games that season were on the road (UCLA & UGA).

The trend around the South has been to re-sod the field every year. I don't know the logic behind it if the field is in good condition. Personally, I would go back to sprigs.

What about the practice field? Who maintains that? And what condition is it in?

I was wondering that as well. Watch it turn out to be 3 kids from the turf management school and it's in perfect condition...would it surprise you?

Besides his Garden looking like it grows great, I'll bet you a bunch that his yard and Hart's yard look like a million dollars!! And, neither look like SWF. I think I know where some of the budget gets spent. It's what I used to call "A Government Job" or "Insider Trading".

For the conspiracy theory fans here you go:

Cbj has behind the scenes launched this crusade because he wants turf and wants the fans upset in order to put pressure on the administration that doesn't want turf.

The field issues are overblown and some of the slipping and sliding is because the new nike shoes actually use a shorter cleat.

Does NT have Nike cleats cause they were slipping too

Being an Ag major I can assure you it want be fixed this year. It does not take a rocket scientist to see we got a weak root system. Mr Campbell is going to tell it like it is. Someone wasted many dollars the last five years.

"Another source said the field has been so treacherous and slippery, UT has taken plays out of the playbook for fear they can’t execute them on a subpar surface."

You get long cleats and short cleats. They are generally screw on. On wet fields you use the long cleats..... It has nothing to do with the shoes. The field is horrible.

Part of my "story" is saying the players aren't allowed to where the cleat they all want. They are wanting to wear a 1/2in cleat but are only allowed to wear a 3/8.

You have anyway to confirm or refute that?

Curious to know

Edit: I confirmed what I was being told. The players prefer a 3/8 molded cleat and we dont have 1/2 molded cleat.

Would love to know to know if that is correct

So, the way to correct this issue, is no longer simply with body position --

“The thing that you have to stress is everything is about body position,” Jones said while discussing what he can do to help his team prepare for it. “You can’t let your feet get outside the position of your body. So it’s really being in a good football position which, we stress all the time. It’s really just being in a football position and not letting your feet get outside the body.”

Field Issues Continue for the Vols (Photos) | Rocky Top Insider

What's your point Rex? He was asked a question about how the players have to compensate for the slippery conditions as they exist. This thread is about the actual field conditions as they exist. Your post is void of humor or common sense so whatever your angle was your post failed.

My guess is nitrogen levels are low causing roots to grow on the thinner layer of the surface vs. down. Weather is too cold to fix, they will lay more of a sand and gravel mixture to shore up loose field, this will fill in the cracks if you will...nothing can be done until the spring with early spring with a different treatment for roots to grow thicker and in a downward pattern. Personally I would spread manure early February, that stuff will be thicker than shag carpet........but that is me :)

We should take some VolNation members over there; we have a few that are experts in spreading manure.
