This is Bobby Campbell whispering to the grass on SWF back in the day, and it would just grow on the spot.

My guess is nitrogen levels are low causing roots to grow on the thinner layer of the surface vs. down. Weather is too cold to fix, they will lay more of a sand and gravel mixture to shore up loose field, this will fill in the cracks if you will...nothing can be done until the spring with early spring with a different treatment for roots to grow thicker and in a downward pattern. Personally I would spread manure early February, that stuff will be thicker than shag carpet........but that is me :)

Not true, there has been a lot of bullsh** on that field the last few years and yet the grass is still bad.

Another source said the field has been so treacherous and slippery, UT has taken plays out of the playbook for fear they can’t execute them on a subpar surface.

Also, I’m told, that a slippery surface can lead to more muscle strains and ankle injuries.

Wonder how many of our injuries happened at home vs away?

We used to have the premier grass field anywhere, now we have an embarrassing situation that even the 'common taters' are talking about.

I'm not sure manure would help. For about 3 years Dooley spread it all over the field and the grass is still crappy. (Pun intended)

So, the way to correct this issue, is no longer simply with body position --

“The thing that you have to stress is everything is about body position,” Jones said while discussing what he can do to help his team prepare for it. “You can’t let your feet get outside the position of your body. So it’s really being in a good football position which, we stress all the time. It’s really just being in a football position and not letting your feet get outside the body.”

Many friends and neighbors use the turf care guidelines outlined by the UT Ag department, and they have the nicest lawns around. They know their stuff. It's unfathomable why they are not consulted for the grass on SWF.

playing football on their lawns regularly, in all kinds of weather. That's one thing.

What pisses me off about this is that other coaching staffs WILL use this to their advantage in recruiting and it's a factor that could have been completely avoided!

Jones yesterday praised the "resiliency" of the stadium field, and said growing better grass was a "process."

Dude, the field started looking terrible after only playing on it for FOUR games. You're telling me that a field shouldn't hold up after only being used four times??

That's not the point. We are using an outside guy, who apparently is clueless, while having an expert turf care department right down the street.

It is always best to close the barn door AFTER all the horses have gotten out!!

Also Gene Simmons suggested the correct cleat length for the team to use! :birgits_giggle:

There are always two sides to everything especially when it comes to the timing of things.

A few huge things that are different now than before CBJ is the practice in August for the public, more closed practices than before, and numerous recruiting days during the summer where there is a head coach that expects the surface to be in game shape with paint and all the fixings. That isn't always what is best at that time of the year especially considering the time aeration is done.

I am not siding with the grounds crew here but things aren't as simple as they seem IMO.

At that time of the year it shouldn't matter that much. I mean you have games on Sat & Sun in Miami, Tampa, Pitt, Philly. UT's field doesn't get that much usage to look as bad as it does.

From 1994-2010 it was never a problem. What has changed since then? That's your problem.

So how many golf courses are in Knoxville? That is a place to start. Spent 20 years in turf management, this is something a year one student be able to manage. This place is not going down the tube but has left the station a while back.

Not saying it's a legit excuse but the number of times from June-August where the field is expected to be in gameday shape is being said to hamper things.

It's much more than before under other coaches is the story.
