Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXII

I loved AJ Johnson and not being a football expert in the least, I used to wonder why he took so much criticism as a player. Now that I see Kirkland I can see why. DK is just a better overall athlete and is much more disruptive. AJ was a great player (leaving aside off field issues) but DK will be a better one. I'm enjoying watching him develop.

Now you see what I myself and a few others were talking about.

If we lose to either Mizzou or Vandy, we can safely assume that this coaching staff will never compete for even an East title here. Two games left to finish strong against teams that UT out talents by a lot. No excuse to not win them both. And the amount of pressure they will be under will be nothing compared to the pressure of trying to win the division.

If they can't pull that off, there's no way they will survive that UF, A&M, UGA, and Bama stretch next year.

I agree with you there. But what do we do if that happens?

Yep. It's fun to watch. And our defense just keeps getting better. We are really close to having a nasty defense that can shut down anyone. Holding Bama to 19 and Henry under 150 in retrospect is very impressive. We aren't consistent enough yet, but we don't give up those big splash plays in bunches like we used to. I can only think of a few all year. Can't wait till we can shut down opposing teams' run games and embarrass their top offensive performers with regularity. I can feel that day coming.

Drawing absolute conclusions like this are hilarious. Winning these final 2 games or losing them does not guarantee anything in the future of this staff....positive or negative.

Tennessee is second in the SEC and sixth nationally in third-down defense, holding opponents to 29.1 percent (43 of 148).

Jennings at FS would beast.

The only concern I have about our remaining games is Dobbs. He is off and I believe his foot injury is preventing his runs and messing up his planting on throws.

Anyone see that laser beam Smith dropped from Dormady? Impressive.

Really good points on these.

I had hoped JJ would shine at WR, he's such a great athlete. He still may do that. But he is a future pro at safety. He has great instincts and loves to mix it up. That has D written all over him. My feelings about the W/L column in 2016 would improve dramatically if he was starting at safety with TKJr.

Dobb's injury is why the O was somewhat lackluster. He's been hurting for awhile and you could tell when he tried to run yesterday. Was reflected in the play calling like it was against Arky.

BrB and a couple of us brought it up about AJ a few years ago. He improved his senior season though. Up until that point he refused to square up in the gap and rock somebody. He would always tackle to the side and most of the time well down the field from the LOS. That is not Kirkland. He runs faster and is willing to square up. He is going to be amazing as he adds 5-10 lbs. more of muscle. Potential to be Al Wilson type good.

It does for me. And it would go beyond just these final two games. The staff would have essentially choked away 5 or even 6 (God forbid) regular season games this year.

Dude if we lose to Vanderbilt and Missouri we have problems. Period.

If they won out in dominant fashion, it wouldn't change your narrative...so quit pretending.

Some people prefer to remain ignorant rather than learn from experience. I'm with you.

I've had to curb my instincts and just go along with this old Butch and staff are learning too routine. Butch and staff took a leap of faith to come to a down program and Hart hired him. So we've had to endure the learning curve since an established top HC was not hired.

My issue is we are 3 years in now. Enough with the learning, they are grown men with each having many years of coaching experience and being paid well. Do it right or find something else to do.

That's not true at all! Pretty sure both Aesius and I would agree that 8-4 is a success. These last two games vs USC and UNT have us a little concerned.

USC shouldn't concern anyone. They're not a bad team. I think they'd beaten Florida if they didn't allow a 55 yard run up the gut with 3 minutes left in game on third down. Florida was conceding that punt and received a gift. They had just scored touchdowns on prior two drives.

I am only concerned if Dobbs is hurt. He's been playing that way for 2 weeks now.

Maybe you and Aesius can tell me the winning numbers for the next Powerball drawing.

USC is playing allot harder for the new coach. They have been right I the thick of it every game since Spurrior hit the road.

North Texas was just an example of playing down to your competition. It happens to every team in every sport. Goof off in the locker room, stadium is 3/4 full and you just aren't into it. These next two games will tell the tale of where this team is.

Thank you Ms Aesius. :) Just heard this before...paradigm shifts to next absolute. If such and such doesn't happen THEN Butch can't get it done. If he ever "gets it done" you and your husband will be silent...then we ALL win.
