Butch says it takes 6 to 7 years to build a program in the SEC

Pinckel gone at Mizzou now. If Richt leaves UGA at the end of this year then CBJ will be the longest tenured coach in the east. The time to make excuses is over. They need to strike now while the iron is hit. The time for UT to take over the east will never be better than now.

Please make it stop!!!

The fact that our coach can't have a normal conversation without having to be careful because his words WILL be taken out of context speaks volumes about some of our "fans". It's really sad.

Our coach never has a normal conversation. It is always cliche riddled coach speak. I say we just judge the team on the field. The team is better this year and should be a contender for the conference title next year. We lost games we shouldn't have and that is concerning. Butch will be judged by how his team performs against our rivals. If he can't beat Florida and Bama soon then he will not continue to be the head coach.

"We're all responsible and it starts with me" is what you say in year one to take the heat off the ****ty team you inherit.

It's not what you say when you make a series of bad decisions that cost your players a game they pretty much had in the bag.

Just to be sure... you know you are wasting time and bandwidth trying to have a reasonable discussion with "Mr Common Sense", right?

We disagree on KB...we start winning against the Floridas and Bama's of the world and he's happy. sjt will still nitpick about whatever can be nitpicked.

No. I can guarantee that when Jones deserves credit I'll give him credit... just as I have.

Agreed. Nobody is denying that he has recruited well and is an enormous upgrade over his predecessor. However, that means little if he can't get it done on the field.

I'm surprised what a little time away does.
When I was here daily, this thread seemed perfectly normal. Heck, I checked in a week ago and this same thread was on top of my list then also. This thread about wording... by a gator fan....

Now, a thread dissecting wording beyond anything that should be considered normal, becomes... I guess humorous?

Here's an article from Dustin Dopriak describing Jones' "taking responsibility for the loss" while not taking any credit for any particular failure in the game and in fact defending all of his decisions. Kind of a hollow gesture IMO.....

Before taking a question from reporters on Monday, Tennessee coach Butch Jones asked that the blame for Saturday's 31-24 double overtime loss to Oklahoma be placed on his shoulders.

"As the head football coach, I am responsible for the losses," Jones said. "I take responsibility.... I take full responsibility for Saturday night."

Jones did not, however, admit to any specific coaching mistakes, and defended Tennessee's decision to kick a field goal on 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line on their first offensive possession instead of pushing for the touchdown.

"If I would've went for it and we didn't get it, you'd be asking me the opposite question," Jones said. " ‘Why didn't you kick the field goal?' That's you're right and your privilege. That's what makes it a great game. We knew going into the game that we needed points. Points were at a premium. We needed momentum. We needed confidence. This is a defense that we didn't have much success with the previous year, so to drive the ball down, we felt we needed to come away with points. ... That decision, about four or five hours went into that single decision."

Jones also said he didn't feel like the Vols were too conservative with their play-calling. He admitted there were decisions he second-guessed, but said he generally believed Tennessee's fourth-quarter failings were more a product of Oklahoma's excellent execution on offense and aggressive pressure on defense.

"We did what we needed to do," Jones said. "Obviously, you start first and foremost with yourself. Just like anything, the power of ‘Why' and what could you to do be better. ‘Could we have done this? Could we have done that?' ... It's all about trying to get your players in the right positions. Is there one or two plays you always second-guess, and look and say ‘Could I have done this?' Yes."

From an oratorical standpoint, precisely what do you want from Butch Jones? Taken at face value, the following statement is not ambiguous or qualified in its inclusivity: "As the head football coach, I am responsible for the losses. I take responsibility.... I take full responsibility for Saturday night."

Would you prefer the following statement? "After careful analysis, I have identified 432 specific points of failure to execute for which I am solely responsible. If you have the time to listen, I will be more than happy to explain them in full and, if you think it necessary, flagellate myself to atone for my sins." To put it mildly, such a litany would seriously undermine Butch's credibility in the eyes of his own players.

As for an adversarial posture toward certain members of the press, I personally applaud it. How long have Tennessee coaches tolerated the likes of John Adams now? The media certainly will always have the last say, but Adams in particular has never wasted any opportunity to be critical of Tennessee's football program, regardless of its then-current degree of success or failure. I don't consider bending over backwards to accommodate "journalists" of his ilk to be part and parcel of Butch Jones' job description.

I don't think you've been following the discussion and why I posted the quotes/article I did. No big deal.

Your attitude has improved a little. but you still fail to admit the train wreck Jones inherited and that it takes time to rebuild. Being negative does not help in createiing an atmosphere in which 18-19 year old kids can develop and maintain their own positive attitude. I realize that every kid is different as to how they react to negative remarks made toward them and their coaches. Player's ability, to a great degree, depends on the environment from which they they come and a positive atmosphere makes it much more likely that they succeed. In the past, many of those who had worked with children and young adults thought that the more your critized them, broke them down, and then tried to rebuild their confidence was the most effective way of developing their attitude. However, during the last 15-20 years, that approach works for some and destroyed others. Since we are not their coaches, our negative statements tends to be negative in their development. In other words, a positive environment usually create better attitudes and is more productive.

What is "is"?

That's the real question.

I stand by my post on page 7, anything after that, don't blame me( or give me credit, not likely anyway).

Go Vols!

Beat The mean green machine, were they in a movie?

If you were hired as the head coach of a program and began making around $70,000 a week and with social media being what it is today, would you hire several PR firms to cover up these boards with positive posts? I would.

Yesterday was the sorriest coaching job I have ever seen. Notice how the majority of posters who attack this post became members after Butch's hire date.

I said this long ago. Reader joined upon Butch's arrival, butchna joined upon his arrival and their post counts per day are ridiculous. Butchna has 3x the posts I have and I've been here since 2009.

You're trying to sort out a conspiracy brewed up by a dude, whose initial schtick was that his mom didn't like Todd Kelly and we can't argue with her. He doesn't post that much so, of course BowlingGreen's on board with him. :loco:

ONLY guy on my ignore list btw...Reek momma schtick guy...not BG. :)
