"We're all responsible and it starts with me" is what you say in year one to take the heat off the ****ty team you inherit.
It's not what you say when you make a series of bad decisions that cost your players a game they pretty much had in the bag.
Here's an article from Dustin Dopriak describing Jones' "taking responsibility for the loss" while not taking any credit for any particular failure in the game and in fact defending all of his decisions. Kind of a hollow gesture IMO.....
Before taking a question from reporters on Monday, Tennessee coach Butch Jones asked that the blame for Saturday's 31-24 double overtime loss to Oklahoma be placed on his shoulders.
"As the head football coach, I am responsible for the losses," Jones said. "I take responsibility. ... I take full responsibility for Saturday night."
Jones did not, however, admit to any specific coaching mistakes, and defended Tennessee's decision to kick a field goal on 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line on their first offensive possession instead of pushing for the touchdown.
"If I would've went for it and we didn't get it, you'd be asking me the opposite question," Jones said. " Why didn't you kick the field goal?' That's you're right and your privilege. That's what makes it a great game. We knew going into the game that we needed points. Points were at a premium. We needed momentum. We needed confidence. This is a defense that we didn't have much success with the previous year, so to drive the ball down, we felt we needed to come away with points. ... That decision, about four or five hours went into that single decision."
Jones also said he didn't feel like the Vols were too conservative with their play-calling. He admitted there were decisions he second-guessed, but said he generally believed Tennessee's fourth-quarter failings were more a product of Oklahoma's excellent execution on offense and aggressive pressure on defense.
"We did what we needed to do," Jones said. "Obviously, you start first and foremost with yourself. Just like anything, the power of Why' and what could you to do be better. Could we have done this? Could we have done that?' ... It's all about trying to get your players in the right positions. Is there one or two plays you always second-guess, and look and say Could I have done this?' Yes."
