I was/am frustrated with the playcalling and adjusting.

First 2 drives Hurd was ripping off 20 yard runs like crazy. USC adjusted and put 8 men in the box. We rarely challenged them downfield. Feel like that would have opened the run game back up again.

We won but we ALWAYS have something to complain about.

I think Butch is stubborn and coaches extremely stiff with a lead until we get down (like UGA) and then he adjusts. Jmo

This post was in response to travis Stephens and one that I would make my number one bullet point if I was recruiting against us for an elite back

I'd agree with you, J, but most of the time Jalen has no idea if he's getting the ball or not to the very last minute. There are not many designed runs plays. It's all based off of whether Dobbs decides to keep or not. By default, you're a little tentative and not hit the hole as quick or hard as you should when you're not 100% sure what the play is even going to be.

It's a read option. It's inherent with the style. It's not a secret to anybody. Anyone running the read option is going to hear this exact recruiting pitch from non-read option teams. It didn't suddenly become an issue because someone who claims to know Hurd said so on a message board.

On top of that, the hesitation on the offensive side is compounded on the defensive side. That's the WHOLE point of the scheme--to make defenders hesitate. At worst it's a wash to straight hand offs. At best it's an added benefit.

The real problem is the blocking up front at times. It's not the scheme. This is a weird argument.

It seems like the coaches are just terrified that Dobbs is going to get sacked and injured or throw an INT.

So frustrating that we don't punish teams for loading the box. Dobbs is capable of doing it. The OL is blocking well enough to give him some time now as well.

It's not just Hurd. When elite players commit to a program to win championships then have a lost season like this, it's very discouraging. Of course, good players aren't going to be happy. UF just won the SECE, and we barely squeaked past a bad SCAR team with a walk-on QB, only a handful of playmakers and an interim coach. Complaining doesn't mean players will transfer, but some might.

I don't believe Jalen Hurd is seriously going to quit the team. Secondly, I can't believe people are actually giving legitimacy to the very idea.

It's the kind of rumor on Volnation I've learned to ignore until it is reported by ESPN or another major news outlet.

Not worth spending an second worrying about until it is confirmed. He probably complained within earshot of someone who knows someone with a VN account, and while it may have been a legitimate moment of frustration for him it takes on a life of its own here.

As mentioned previously in this thread, he had way more yards rushing against Bama than the leader for the Heisman. That's with 2 18 year olds on the right side of the OL.

This is such BS

I was thinking about this however I remembered that Bama was playing in their 7 game in a row without a bye. I don't know if we would have had as much success if Bama was coming off a bye week when we played them.

I don't know. I'd argue the system is helping Hurd, not hurting him.

This team is 3rd in the SEC in rushing despite a suspect offensive line. Without the misdirection of the read option and the threat of Dobbs running it Hurd would be finding less space than he is.
Yes!!! It took this kind of offense to run on Bama... LSU didn't get anywhere running in their O

Hurd is frustrated because he hasn't had the season he was hoping for in stats. He wants to be up there in the numbers with Henry and Fournette. He certainly has the talent to be up there, but he may barely get to 1000 yards. That is very frustrating to a good player. He is not thinking about transferring or quitting.

Dobbs poor ball protection skills is the biggest fear IMO.

If Dobbs can improve on only one thing in the off season I would choose ball protection even over passing accuracy. It's a bigger issue IMO

Completely understandable.

Do you know if Hurd is planning on declaring after next season?

It seems like NFL scouts will understand why his stats are merely "good" instead of "great" (OL, offensive system) and that his performance at the Combine will inevitably put him in the same league as Fournette and Henry on draft day.

He has around 850 (I think). 3 to play and a bowl. Could end up around 1300

The social environment around college football is so fervent the temptation for parents not to chime in an second guess coaches must be intense.

And you have multiple platforms to enable one to second-guess in a nano-second. Add some serious passion and you've got the formula for controversy.

I know I played high school and college ball a looonnnnggg time ago, but I've had more than one coach tell me the one thing they absolutely despise beyond all else is meddling parents/families.

I could be way off base here, but it seems like Hurd getting hit at the LOS so frequently and still being on track for a season with those kinds of numbers would be more appealing to NFL scouts than a guy who puts up 2,000 yards because his OL opens up Grand Canyon-sized holes for him.

What is Stephens saying?

That Hurd has the ability to thrive in this offense especially when the OL is right. He says you can't expect two freshmen OL to compete on a level well enough in the SEC. It's frustrating. Hurd is a rare back with his size and the gaps he's supposed to be hitting are not there yet, but will be. It's why he's running so lateral. The line will be better next year for him to excel in hitting the gaps. Needs to stay. And he'll do a lot of damage in the NFL when he gets there. That's kind of a summary. I got a lot of it from pages 9-11 in that thread.

My small high school here in VA, Union, finished off the season Friday with a perfect 10-0 record. We host Gretna in the first round of the playoffs this Friday at 7pm. Go Bears! But not why I'm posting.

We have a 6'4+ Sophomore receiver names James Mitchell. Kid has awesome ball skills and is quick as a cat. The reason I post this is he was on a visit to Clemson for the FSU game this past Saturday. He's heard from them, UNC, and VT among others. He's not heard from UT yet, but he would be open to it. My brother helps coach Union, if I hear anything I'll pass it on. Competition isn't the greatest, (2A) but the kids gonna be good.

That's old Powell valley/Appalachia right? I went to clintwood. Good players out of there including nfl running backs Thomas and Julius jones.

I agree. He fumbles way too much for his number of carries. Fortunately, they've gotten a lot of those back, but that's not always the case.

I thought we did a decent job of adjusting, honestly. Pearson had his best game as a Vol, but for one seam route where he wasn't looking for the ball. Kamara, Wolf, and Johnson all had receptions of 20 yards or more. Just missed a bomb to Malone that would have iced the game.

We had a couple of fumbles that made our offensive output look worse than it was. But the offensive gameplan was decent. I think South Carolina just decided after that second TD that they were going to live with Dobbs throwing the ball no matter what happened - they didn't want Hurd getting to the third level and sublimating their DBs anymore.

@patrickbrownTFP: Stripling said Vols have lost five defensive linemen to season-ending injuries. (Maggitt, Tuttle, Butcher, Saulsberry and ...?).
