Missouri Players Go On Strike (merged)

I don't think Pinkel is doing this as an excuse but I do think he has handled it wrong. If a group of players comes to me with their boycott, I would say, "do as your conscience tells you but as long as the university remains open, we practice and prepare for the next game."

A coach has no right to force players to support political candidates or religious institutions. By suspending practice and tweeting what he did, Pinkel has used his team to support a political cause. If I were AD, I would fire him.

I am confused. 32 players are protesting so that still leaves 53 scholarship athletes and walk ons that could play the game if this continues.

Pinkel has lent the whole team's support and refuses to hold practices until this is resolved.

Missouri still has enough players to feild a team. And they will. Walk ons or not.

they have a serious social issue up there nothing to take lightly, i support the young men for what they are doing, colleges are the birth place for movements like this and should continue to be that way. Its honestly refreshing to see students taking a stand and it seems like they have alot of backing from not only the coaches but outside the university as well. something will happen swiftly with this i would think.

Its not just the players, it just gained alot more momentum once the players voices there agreement with the issues......it was mulitple incidents that occured with the racial chants the feces swastika etc....

If some players want to object to something the president or someone else did, fine, but they are not entitled to not play football. They should be told to continue to practice and play or be kicked off of scholarship and the team. The university's board can look into whatever it is that the president has supposedly done.

So as I read on this matter and try to truly separate the proverbial wheat from chaff, I believe Tim Wolfe probably needs to go. Not so much that he can do anything to stop yahoos from being yahoos, but because of a total lack of taking a proactive approach to addressing student concerns. He obviously can't change state law on the planned parenthood thing (if that is real. The only place i saw that is in the Breitbart article) but he could have easily diverted that issue to state politicians where it belongs anyway. With regard to the 10% of staff being African American.... I'm not sure what the percentage of black students is and not sure that affirmative action laws wouldn't address this at some level. At any rate, there is no reason that Wolfe shouldn't have been more open to at least having dialogue prior to things getting this far down the road. I suspect he will be let go this morning when the University Board meets based primarily on a lack of confidence in his leadership. Just my $.02.

Seems like a clear violation of contract. If not specifically so, at least a dereliction of duty worthy of reprimand, fines, docked pay, or termination.

You work for the university, hoss, you don't just get to decide you don't want to run practices - regardless of worthiness of the cause.

This is a political war started by fringe groups and backed by the governor amd Pinkel. Nothing more and nothing less. It's mainly because of the healthcare and planned parenthood issues there....that's the real story.

This is a political assault led by Pinkel and company....

Remember? He drummed up the Michael Sam issue and exploited that as well! Pinkel is a thug......

One of the most warped things I have ever read on this site. First you acknowledge Pinkel is backing the players (accurate) then you switch and accuse him of "leading" a political assault (unreal), finally you have him drumming up Michael Sam being gay (unbelievable). Crawl back under your rock and quit with this crap.

couldnt disagree with this more, the students are fighting for a totally different cause that really football is totally secondary to....if the coach is in support, i think we all know Pinkel is a classy guy, there is a bigger issue....

The interesting thing here is that both Pinkel and the AD publicly support the players. That should tell us something about where the politics of this is going.

Preaching to the choir. Even if they fire the president, they should double up with Pinkel. Fire him, for cause. He should've made a supporting statement and left it there. If he gets through this unscathed, lots of copycats at far more liberal universities to follow.

Butch said he is not going to apologize for a win so i would think we would take the forfeit and move on.

Pinkel and his staff are idiots for getting involved in this. This is a horrible precedent.

are you kidding, Coach Pinkel wants to keep his team together......I can't speak to whether there is racism in Columbia Missouri or anywhere else, but Pinkel merely supported his football players decision to boycott. It would have been the kiss of death not to.

Universities actively teach kids to play the oppressed minority card (race, gender, sexual preference, non-Christian religion, size, class, you name it) so it's no surprise they are now. I know we probably might not have the full story, but this looks like an over reaction to an inaction at this point.

GO VOLS!

Missouri led by Gary Pinkel did politicize nationally the Michael Sam personal issue. It is neither my business nor your business what Michael Sam does with his personal life. End of story.

Their demands are over the top. I understand frustration and supposed inequality, but making demands that seem to be drawn up by a bunch of pissed off 10th graders is not the way to go about it. Of course IMO.

You watch...the University will cave in and this will become the new "norm" in our entitled 2015 America of who cries the loudest...

Before we had the video cameras on cell phones and racism was being brought out I have experienced some crazy stuff in Knoxville. I love love love Knoxville before I say what I am going to say. And the views and idiotic decisions of the small amount of people does not speak for the majority In Knoxville which are wonderful people. I say this because I can relate to the players. There is double standards sometimes in th south. I can't tell you how many times I have been called the n word by some fans at our own stadium, got horrible voicemails and notes from various people. We went to a high end restaraunt once and were not allowed in, of course until people recognized who we were, then they just so happened to have a table for us of the many empty tables. At that time I was with 2 other very prominent members of our team that was my race. This stuff is real. Peaceful protesting like the team is doing is good. I don't know what is going on, but I am
All for peaceful protesting. Don't love me when I am playing football and shun me when I am not. That's the players point of view.

If the coaches didn't "support" the team they'd be labeled racists and the pitchfork and torch mob will want their heads as well.

I have. First, I'm against any racism period. That said, if the sds article I read is correct and the #1 demand is the president apologize for his white privilege, then their protest lost all credibility imo.
