Any ideas who "Rupert" may have been?

Apparently a prominent member of 1950s-? American political cliques (but not necessarily a politician) that served in the Pacific during WWII.

My initial thought was JFK, but he wasn't in intelligence, as far as I know. Plus, I think Schindler would have at least conceded Rupert was a politician of some degree. I'm not familiar enough with 1950s politics to know any significant donors and/or ideologues that may have been palling around with the bigwigs in Washington.

I don't think I speak in hyperbole when I say that Russia is the most culturally paranoid country on Earth.

If it involves anyone being perceived as "out-doing" them, especially if it's the US, they'll come up with every nutbag theory this side of the lunar landing to rationalize how it can't possibly be true (the implication of course being that if Russia can't do it then surely no one else can either).

A bit surprising.

Belarus says does not need a Russian military base: report | Reuters

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday his country did not need a Russian military base, appearing to make a rare concession to public protests before this weekend's presidential election.

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed a deal for a military airbase on Belarussian territory and ordered defense and foreign ministry officials to start talks with Belarus.

"We don't need a base at the moment ... I hear shrieks from the opposition about the deployment of a Russian airbase. I don't know anything about it," Lukashenko was quoted as saying by official news agency Belta.

he doesn't know anything about a proposed Russian airbase? and this is happening right before elections? any guess on how long after reelection that this comes back up? politicians going to politician.
