'16 PF NC Grant Williams (UT commit 11/13/15)

It seems as if you're trying to portray my view as though he should just make the decision without any counsel from his mom/family and no consideration for her opinion.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I just think the ultimate decision should be his to make, and not his mom.

I'm not asking you to agree with me, and Williams' situation is much different than the large majority of other college athletes making the same decision, so there isn't a blanket right/wrong answer.

Sorry, not meant to be condemnation. It is, as you point out, a very different situation than the large majority of these kids. It appears Grant is a smart kid who has a smart mother who cares very much about him and his future. I'm sure they'll work it out. The great thing is, he is choosing from some wonderful options.

I did find a prime example of a former Texas player to compare to Grant Williams to. PJ Tucker. Tucker, class of 2003, came in at Texas as a 6'5, 240lb PF. Similar in size and weight, Tucker was also known as a guy without position, but still developed well enough to play in the NBA for multiple years. Williams will need to continue to develop a consistent 3 point shot if he does want to be a successful SF/PF.

Here's PJ Tucker's Rivals file: Anthony Tucker - Yahoo! Sports

Tucker's background is a bit more like Jeronne Maymon's than Williams, though, in that Tucker was No. 66 in the country per Scout, No. 71 on 247 and 107 on Rivals per your link above. Maymon was a consensus top 100 guy as well with similar measurements. Both more highly rated than Williams.

I'm sure the Tucker comparison is what attracts Williams to the Tennessee staff, though. Hope it plays out that way.

Agreed

I would be very curious to hear the explanation from Meyer as to why specifically Williams ranking has dropped. IIRC he was ranked around 81 by 247 when Tennessee first offered him, he played very well against good competition, surely they didn't drop him simply over his measurements?

Good find. Maybe not Grant, but like a lot of our guys Tuckers offer list even has Clemson as a main contender. lol

Sort of, I think. Most of the writing I see has a line about, (scouts/coaches) think he's a low post and he's not big enough to play there in college. That's the best I can tell,

So when he was ranked ~80, they thought he was big enough?

Purely a guess, but maybe they had never seen him in person before this summer. His height was listed at 6-8 on the EYBL roster. When they see him, they eyeball him at 6-5 or 6-6 like Rob Lewis did. I have read he played mostly low post in EYBL. Putting all that together they go from "this is a top 100 6-8 low post" to, "hmm, this kids only 6-5. How can he play down low at the next level?" All that is pure conjecture.

Very possible. And given(this opinion being given based off nothing but video) he doesn't try to make the game come to him, he may not have done anything to impress. His game and his age make him a nice get. Imo

So in that theory he was ranked ~80 by having nobody ever see him play in person?

Yep, certainly none of the national guys. They have guys they trust to put them on the trail of up and comers. Meyer gets a recommendation - probably from the phenomhoops guys who have been the biggest boosters for both Williams and Fulkerson - sees a kid who is Charlotte POY and puts him in the first list. Jordan Bone was similarly ranked, but just hasn't dropped as far. In both cases, 247 is the outlier with their rankings. Neither is currently ranked by Scout, Rivals or ESPN.

So basically Williams has a top 100 game, but his measurements are the only question mark? So fair to presume if he was 6'8" he'd likely be top 50?

Not sure how you got there from my comments.

If Williams had a top 100 game, he'd likely be in the multiple 100s - see Jeronne Maymon, DeJuan Blair, pj Tucker, etal - all similar stature guys who were consensus top 100. I'm saying the only service to rank him at all may have not evaluated him thoroughly and, when they finally did, the height could have been one of the big strikes against him. If you want to know for sure, just ask Jerry Meyer. He answers questions on twitter.

Don't you see it as a significant factor that Williams is ranked only by one service and that he doesn't move the needle with any of the rest?

Well rivals, scout and ESPN only rank to 100 or 150, so...

Did some more digging. In an earlier note, Eric Bossi said Grant wasn't in the discussion for top 150. ESPN released a list of 450 and he was not on that list at all that i can find. Scout's list goes to 598 and Williams was around 350. This is a guy who played on one of the highest profile AAU teams in the country and was seen by a lot of people.

Right, I know what he's ranked NOW, I'm talking ~6 months ago when 247 had him around 80.

Well then his stock is falling at about 3times the rate of Blackwell. Orbit mission

Absolutely, never said it wasn't? I was just asking Germ his opinion on why he was ranked there, performed well during AAU which Blackwell did not, but saw his ranking go down, you knew that but felt the need to jump in anyways SMDH

I won't believe he was rated 80 overall by 247 6months ago until you provide a link to show it.

I don't think that is possible. Composite yes but not overall. Sorry

Lol I don't really care what you think, as once again this conversation didn't involve you. Germ who was around when Williams recruitment started recalls it at evidenced by the last page of discussion with him on the topic.
