Key difference this week.

YOUNG OL in a hostile environment. I expect quite a few false starts and MA's from that group and Barnett and Maggitt to get to Mayfield enough to get him off base and not throwing bullseyes like we saw Saturday.

We will give up some big plays for sure but overall I think their OL is the reason they lose.

I don't understand the sentiment that this game has no bearing on Jones.

If we get blown out or dominated wire to wire, Jones simply isn't the coach many of us hope he is. The proverbial writing will be on the wall; great recruiter and ambassador of our program but not a good coach.

You're too fatalistic...prolly shouldn't watch Game of Thrones. :scare:

Well there goes that idea. Thanks for the info. on that. :hi:

Didn't I just read a really good post stating we only had a middle linebacker in formation for just 16 snaps? What position is making the calls when there is no middle linebacker?

Yes

Maybe so. If you take last year's UF game and a blowout loss at home to OU, I don't know how a reasonable fan would conclude that we have a coach capable of taking us where we eventually want to go.

I'm not seeing it stated much, but the OL only gave up one sack. That's a good sign given the problems we saw last year. Wonder how much is due to Worley not playing and the OL actually improving?

So, you are saying that if we lose by 21 points or so, that the best long term move for Tennessee football would be for Dave Hart to fire Butch Jones on the spot?

Best thing about our problems is the players have the talent to correct this on the backend. Been years snide we could say that. I expect them to be much better this week. Some of the plays were technical issues. Others were flat out effort issues.

I honestly thought after watching the offensive plays again, he was the fifth best lineman Saturday.

Ya Coleman seemed the hot pick for that award. Is that a media selection? Most of them are clueless.

Still, glad for the positive pub.

I think it's a pretty fantastical leap in logic to conclude that from his statement lol

Butch just needs to win on Saturday. He doesn't HAVE to win and no one will care about this game if he finishes 10-2 or 9-3 and wins the East, but it would help legitimize him as a coach and also provide a bit of a "buffer" to lessen the sting of any losses down the road this season.

His SEC coaching peers win these types of games all the time. Saban just steam rolled Wisconsin with a highly talented team but one that has issues of its own. Sumlin beat ASU handily. Malzahn beat Louisville. Spurrier beat UNC by the skin of his teeth, but still pulled out the win.

It would be disheartening to go through three years of Butch Jones football and our best OOC win is Utah State or Bowling Green State.

What the what?

@stevemegargee: Tennessee OT Kyler Kerbyson is #SEC offensive lineman of the week #tennessee #vols

11-1.

The SIDS have a lot of pull with those awards. No doubt our SIDs/coaches felt like he deserved the award because they are based off nominations

This. It's college football; every game matters. And yes, a close loss is one thing but a blow out is another.

That said, if it's a blow out, some criticism would definitely be warranted but I still won't be calling for his job at that point.

Easier when you throw out the rest of the games AND the recruiting/culture reset. Overreaction is overreaction. And if we DON'T get "blown out"? Or (EGAD!) win? Whatchu gonna do with all that pent up defeatism? :dunno:

Didn't the D keep the Orange on almost all of camp? Insinuating they were outperforming the O. The O is damn good so that gives me confidence that the D will step up. Al Wilson needs to make his way to the locker room/sideline Saturday imo.

Nope. I said nothing of the sort.

Clearly, CBJ is seen as somewhat of a savior of this program (flipping a terrible roster) and someone who can within the next 2 year get us competing for SEC and national championships.

My point is that if we get blown out by OU, taken with the UF debacle last year, the proverbial writing on the wall would be there for our fanbase that CBJ is much closer to a Richt or Fulmer (once the rest of the SEC caught up) than a Saban, Malzahn, Pete Carroll, Meyer, Bryant, Neyland, etc.

Denying such would be akin to being a UGA fan who can't bring themselves to admit that Richt will never get the job done despite all the tools in the world.

Having said all that, our fanbase should understand more than anyone that firing a Fulmer, despite their faults, doesn't guarantee a brighter future.
