Why not take his tv away for a day or put him in timeout?..... Maybe make him write "I won't steal no more ****" a hundred times ?

Why not just execute him on the spot? Let's get some Sharia law up in here!

See how stupid it is to use hyperbole to make you sound more reasonable?

Why don't you address what actually happened and the consequences of the act. The guy stole a few bucks worth of ****, and we paid for his stay in prison for four months. I'm not even going to touch his death, for the sake of keeping it simple for you, let's just look at it economically. Does it make sense? Is it a rational punishment?

That actually would have been the most economical...just saying.

Make him pick up trash one weekend. And if he does really have mental issues, get him the help he needs, instead of locking him in a jail cell.

Did you even read the story? The guy was being held at lock up bc he was ordered to be sent to a mental hospital ( the help he needs) but their was no bed available.....he had went before the judge twice with renewed orders trying to get him into a mental facility. The guy was refusing all meds and food....it can be argued the police should have sent him to a regular hospital but still their is only so much you can do for someone that does not want to do for themselves.

This guy had already done something similar three times at least....I'm not so sure you would feel as lenient if you were the store owner having your sh$t stolen all the time.

Ok then.... Why not just let the guy keep the stuff he stole? I mean it was only $5.....

This easily highlights the fact that the resources we used to build more prisons would have been better served building mental health facilities. Again, we have to overhaul our criminal justice system from top to bottom. Who should we be locking up? What "crimes" are we going to aggressively enforce? What "crimes" need to be written out of the law books all together? What tactics and training do officers need to minimize the need for using lethal force?

So they' can't find a bed for one guy means they need to build a new mental hospital? I agree that some laws need to be removed but not nearly as many as I'm sure you do....isn't it amazing that the majority can go their entire lives without spending a day in jail?

No, and neither is making him simply return the money. That is every bit as ludicrous. He needs to feel some pain. Make him clean up sidewalks for a month. Wash police cars. Something.

I'd rather make him work it off. Not just the $5, but some punitive punishment as well. Like I said above, make him wash cop cars for a month, every day for 2 hours. If he has a job, (which I doubt) too bad. Show up or go to jail.

Slave labor. I see nothing going wrong with that...
