The meltdown that is happening on the Vandy message boards

If they go 1-11, which is very likely, you have to fire Mason. The guy just doesn't seem like head coach material. Who do you replace Mason with? I have no idea. I doubt anyone will be able to replicate Franklin's success (much of that success was due to a stockpile of decent players left by Bobby Johnson, catching teams while they were down/heavily injured/or both, and playing a laughable non-conference schedule). I agree that Vandy's best option would be to try to run some sort of gimmicky offense (Georgia Tech's triple option would probably be a good choice for Vandy to emulate). I doubt they will ever be able to win the East or even challenge for it, however, with the right coach and system they should be able to win enough games to make a bowl on a somewhat consistent basis.

I wonder if someone like Ken Niumatalolo (Navy HC) would take on the Vanderbilt dumpster fire if they go 1-11 or winless...

IMO, they have three viable options for replacing Mason:

-A guy who runs a gimmicky offense, either triple-option or just one that is pretty far from the norm that will force teams to really switch gears defensively to prepare for it. They'll still lose most games, but those types of offenses are good for stealing a win or two each season if they can catch teams on a bad week. Hiring a defensive coach in Mason was a huge mistake. You rarely see lower-tier teams win with defense because they can't recruit the athletes necessary to make stops when it counts.

-An older coach who can stabilize the program and retire there. I have no idea if Mack Brown has any desire to continue coaching, but he should be Williams' first call after Mason is canned (he's from TN and started his college playing career at Vandy). Frank Beamer and Kirk Ferentz are other options, although it's unlikely either will be fired after 2015.

-A great young recruiter who has strong ties to Florida or Georgia and is still considered too green to be a head coach at most programs. This seems like a no-brainer to me. I think Vandy CAN recruit at least as well as Kentucky is right now, but they need someone who can sell the program like Franklin did. Mason is doing nothing on the recruiting trail and has been a ghost when it comes to promoting the program. A young current assistant coach, preferably in the SEC, who isn't necessarily ready to be a head coach but has the energy and ties to pull in good classes could succeed if he's surrounded by veteran assistant coaches.

Honestly I don't think any of those scenarios will have any lasting impact until Vandy ponies up some dough to upgrade facilities. Their stadium is an absolute embarrassment. They are being left in the dust by all SEC and power five schools and by many mid majors.

No recruits that can help win at a Power 5 level will choose to play there for much longer.

The stadium does suck, but they do have slightly better locker rooms and an indoor practice facility now.

The problem with Vandys stadium is the lack of support from their fan. It's freaking empty every game!

Of course that buffoon they call a coach doesn't help. I'd really be surprised if he lasted 2 seasons. Even that idiot named Dooley got three years, I can't see Mason getting that long.

That's why I think CKN would be a good choice if interested. The triple option is an offensive system that doesn't require elite athletes to be effective, and it is difficult to prepare for because most P5 teams will play 1-2 of those teams each year, tops.

Whether he would take the job... Meh. He has ties to the service academies and seems very happy as the HC at Navy.

That's true. As long as he beats Army every year, he's doing a great job.

Replacing Mason will be a reach for sure and most likely involve a coach that no one has ever heard of.

They won't even be in position to hire hot commodity coordinators this time around.

If y'all ever needed more reason to hate Vandy, just look up some of their fans on Twitter. They trash UT non-stop. The best are the ones who have been talking smack about the 2013 game after it just played on their SEC Network takeover. Guess someone needs to tell them that James Franklin isn't walking through that door and that they may not beat Tennessee again for another 30 years.

Vandy fans know it deep down. Thats all they have to talk about right now. Its about to get ugly again on West End. They all know it. They just dont want to admit it. That garbage ass offense of theirs will be on display again here very soon. I saw the spring game. New Scheme, Same players and same results. Cant even complete a simple pass. They can change coordinators every yr and they can talk scheme all they want. It doesnt really matter as long as you have MAC and FCS level personnel on Offense. Pretty soon the reality will set in with their fans after they get beat by WKU and then get curbstomped by UGA the next week. The stands will be empty and Mason will be stuttering over his words at their post game pressers of about 7 people.

"Here's my bold and rare prediction, Vanderbilt's football team will go to a bowl game this season, and the overhyped Vawls and their terrible coach will not!"

That's coming from a regular over there at VM. :lolabove:

It's weird how every team's fans have convinced themselves that Butch is a terrible coach, especially Vandy who have Derek "Uh" Mason roaming their sideline. So much denial.

Butch has not consistently won the "big" ones (other than beating Stevie Boy twice:)), so all they see is FL beating us at home, Ole Miss stomping us, MO beating us again, and us barely beating Vandy away. When he starts winning those games and beats Vandy by double digits, they will change their tune. Until then, they call them the way they want to see them. Which is not in our favor.

he lost to the teams with better rosters than us. I dont see why they rag on him for that. Thats changing very fast.

SEC fans are holding on to the idea that Butch is a bad coach for dear life. The idea of Tennessee returning to prominence is terrifying for them. Vandy fans are also the type to talk smack about Tennessee no matter what. We could go 15-0 this season and beat them by 70 and they would still say they own the state because they won a baseball national championship in 2014.

what about Ludwig taking over? I don't think it will happen/or would turn out well for Vandy; but the possibility of him being the "coach in waiting" is out there.

David Pollack and Galloway Live on sportscenter trying to be nice about Vandy and the changes they have made. Then they just decided " what the hell am i thinking? They will win maybe 3 games" HAHA.

That attitude, in a nutshell, is why some of us harbor a Cafego-esque contempt for Vanderbilt and positively relish the 62-14 and 65-0 type bloodlettings that we occasionally inflict on them.

Can anyone transcribe what the hell Mason says during the first 5 or so seconds of the press conference after the Vandy-UT game last season?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_HCGkH_FF8

It sounds like he says that it was a "good win." Does anyone else hear that?

Yeah, he said that he wanted to 'gradulate Coach Jones and the UT team on a good win.
