General Neyland vs Bear Byrant

Fulmer was 11-5 vs Alabama not including the tie that was thrown out because Alabama had been cheating.....again.

Actually, you counted the tie. Without the forfeit, Fulmer was 10-5-1. And that was the first time Bama had been on probation, so "again" isn't really correct.

vs Meyer: 0-4

vs Saban: 1-4

vs Richt: 3-5

Thanks. That is as ugly as one might have imagined, for sure.

I think Fulmer was a good coach but do not see where he is in the same category as a Neyland, and that is my point.

On that point, we absolutely agree. None touch the General so far in our history. None are even close. Here's hoping Butch becomes the first.

Isn't part of coaching getting better talent than everyone else. No one had a great record vs those three coaches during that 4 year stretch. The game runs in cycles and Tennessee even in a bad 8 year stretch won 2/3 of their games which was the 21st best record in the nation and they played in 3 SECCGs.

Nope. You are leaving out how Fulmer beat Bama with the NCAA and got y'all on probation for cheating. That's the 11th win. I also enjoyed how the Vols beat Bama 7 consecutive years and 9 out of 10 times while Fulmer was the coach.

Wait, he did beat Saban once in 2001 with Kelly Washington. He only played Meyer 3 times losing all 3 games and he might have beat Richt twice in eight years. Considering that, he just had better talent that the other teams he faced.

Solid take.

He had a handful of seasons that he could have finished off better that could have got him close but those didn't turn out.

Neyland in the discussion of the greatest football coaches in NCAA history. However, if some of you whiners had been alive in the 40s, you would have been screaming to fire him when the Vols went 5-5, 4-4-1, and 7-2-1 in 47, 48, and 49.

"He's quit on the job and will never win again." Then you would have missed the 21-2 record over the next two years and a National Title.

Neyland is the greatest coach in UT history (built the program) and Fulmer is second.

That's cool, and good for you and your enjoyment.

While I totally appreciate the fact that Fulmer's streak was the high water mark for UT in the TSIO series, Bama has won 7 or more in a row over Tennessee 4 different times (including the present), so forgive me if I'm not overly impressed.

Tennesse holds the record for beating Bama in consecutive games.

Also, Bear Bryant died on a losing streak to Tennessee and he took that last loss into eternity.

Forgive us for not caring about what impresses you...your special revered status notwithstanding. :hi:

You are correct. The series was tied in 1970 when we hired a coach that, shall we say, did not want to use the competitive economic methods used by some other schools to keep the program up.

If Dickey had stayed at UT this history may have been completely different since he owned Bear Bryant.

Great. In more than 100 years of UT football, only Neyland and Dickey didn't lose their final game against Alabama.

onevol, I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. Dickey was building a dynasty and the Vols were on the verge of great things. I will go further to say that if Woodruff had hired Majors when Dickey left, Majors would have absolutely killed it under the no limits on scholarship rules of the day.

Woodruff is second only to Hamilton in making a terrible hire. Battle was good man but admitted that he didn't like recruiting and at 28, he was in way over his head. Set UT Football back 15-20 years with that hire.

But Bear lost his last game to Tennessee. In fact, you could make the argument that Tennessee killed him.

The Tide was undefeated and rolled into Knoxville one of the top ranked teams in the nation. Tennessee beat them and it crushed the old man so much, he lost 3 more games including to Southern Miss. Tide was relegated to the Liberty Bowl where they barely beat Illinois. He retired and then died of a broken heart less than 3 months later.

Dickey was only at Tennessee 6 years and he went 3-2-1 vs Bama including winning the last 3 with the last one being a 41-14 mudhole stomping.

Dickey had the Bear's number. If he had stayed Bryant doubles his Krystal burger consumption and dies 7 years earlier. :)

Say whatever you want but your legend is on an eternal losing streak to the Big Orange. Add that one to his winless streak vs Tennessee's legend (General Neyland).

Could be, could be, we'll never know. Watching ole Stevie Spurrier melt down after last year's game makes this scenario absolutely more believable. If we beat old Steve again in 2015, and he retires, then dies of a massive coronary within a year of retirement, we're gonna feel just as bad as those Vols fans did back in 1983.

First, to correct my earlier error: Bryant was 7-3-1 against Dickey.

Dickey was fortunate enough that UT integrated before Alabama (for which Dickey deserves great credit, as he pushed for it).

After Bama integrated and switched to the wishbone, Dickey didn't so much as coach a close loss. His UF teams got destroyed every time they played Bama.

The chances that Dickey would have maintained success against the 1970s Bama teams are somewhere between zero and none.

We don't care what Dickey did vs Bama while he was at Florida.

Tennessee's native son killed the Bear, tho.
