'15 CAN F Kyle Alexander (UT commit 5/7/15)

I've seen comparisons to Owens on here, while that isn't too far off ATM, I think Alexander has far more potential than Owens, and I think he has a better frame to grow into.

My only concern is how well he knows the game. I've heard he only started playing two years ago? (fact check)

Ideally, it would be great to not play him next year. Give him a year to put on weight/ get stronger. Realistically, I'm not sure that's possible.

his dad played and his sister in was a first round WNBA pic I am pretty sure his basketball IQ will come along just fine.

Am I the only who thinks Tariq Owens was more coordinated? I love all the things I've read about Alexander but idk, Alexander looks like he has a hard time catching and dunking a basketball.

What highlights did you watch???? Dude looks just fine in the ones I have seen.

It doesn't matter how much trouble he has catching, as long as he swats everything that comes inside that's fine.with a 7'4" wingspan that should be fine

The guys he was blocking seemed slower and a lot less athletic. If those are his best highlights.. He has a much longer way to go than Tariq. I haven't seen Alexander play and I'm solely going off those highlights, so TIFWIW

i think "he has a longer way to go than Tariq " is a little bit of an exaggeration on your part. Owens averaged 1.5 points and 3 fouls a game? I find highly doubtful he is worse than that.

T. Owens has good skills but will never get strong enough to make it to the NBA.

Kyle is NBA Potential. It takes most big men a few years to develop offensively. I think that kyle will play more than Owens did last year. He will not score much but he will rebound and play good d. He will get better and better.

I think by their junior years, Kyle will be a much better player than Owens. Just my opinion I could be wrong. Really like Owens and hope the best for him.

We'll see. I'll bring it up in 2-3 years. Tariq would have done way better if he was heavier. He was on the bench because he didn't matchup well with the heavier centers.

Lets ask this, if he has such great NBA potential why were his best offers New Mexico and Rice? Someone said "well Duke, Kentucky don't recruit projects", but isn't it odd none of the high-mid major programs didn't offer? I mean no Wichita State, Xavier, SDSU, Butler or any program similar. I know I'll get hate for this post, but I've seen it said about a lot of our other recruits who weren't top 150 recruits.

Not sure how many of those are still looking. Recruiting has changed with more prospects emerging later and later.
But, You're right. At this point it's recruiting projects and hoping you hit. Im not convinced how much better these will be than Owens and Carmichael. Not many can't miss prospects at this point.

I agree with you. Alexander is very raw in his abilities right now. The thing that is encouraging is he is a freak athlete at that size. If he puts in the work required then watch out by his junior year.

Owens problem was definitely weight, so obviously a heavier Owens would have done better. That's like saying my problem was height, I would have done better if I was taller. The eye test should tell you Alexander has a better frame, and more room to grow anyway. I was a big Owens advocate, but between the two, I think Alexander has better SEC potential.

I wish we could have kept Owens and got Alexander too. In two years those two would be a force to be reckon with down low on D. Twin towers.

The thing about all of this Owens/Alexander talk is that people tend to portray it as an either/or situation. "I'd rather have kept Owens" etc.. This was never a possibility; he was gone, and we needed size. With things looking grim for Izundu, Barnes probably took the bird in hand with KA. I think it was a good decision.

For those saying "But we had size with Carmichael, and he was a sophomore who had been through the rigors of the SEC!", let me offer this counter:

1. WC was still vastly unproven and a bit undersized.
2. CRB has traditionally recruited taller bigs.
3. CRB obviously saw nothing in WC that indicated "hey, this guy can succeed in my system and contribute down the road." Thus, Willie is gone.

Willie came out and said the transfer was completely his decision. Just throwing that there.

That's fair, and perhaps my statement was a bit strong. I just have a lingering feeling that if CRB really wanted to keep WC around, he would have been able to convince him.

“He is a player, a lot like Ray (Kasongo), that we are excited about, because we knew we needed to get some size,” Barnes said. “We knew that. And we are excited with Kyle for a lot of reasons. One, he’s got length. Terrific hands. He’s quick off the ground, a great second and third jump. Hasn’t been playing very long, but he’s got some great blood in his family in the fact he’s got a sister who plays in the WNBA. His father played Division I basketball.”
-Rick Barnes BOC

“Coach (Rob) Lanier had been recruiting Kyle Alexander with the idea that he might come to Texas and redshirt,” Barnes said. “Once we got here (Knoxville), the redshirt thing went out the window.”
-Scout

Well.. We'll get to see what he brings this year.

Yea I don't think anyone really thought he would redshirt given the current roster makeup, if we had landed Izundu or White, possibly a chance, but zero chance once they missed on those guys. Hopefully we can stay healthy in the post, if we can we will be alright, will be very important IMO.
