It's [not yet] official, Rick Barnes in as head coach

There are a number of coaches that I like better. But in the long run I think this pans out for the best

Shaka Smart reportedly in talks with texas. That would disappoint me as I live in VA and like VCU--and dislike texas.

No I haven't. I watch a lot of college basketball. He isn't a good coach.

This is a straight, awful situation of looking at the results, not the process. Texas has THE BIGGEST ATHLETIC BUDGET IN THE COUNTRY. Austin is a place college kids want to go. Texas is a brand name, the flagship program in the state, and has numerous boosters. It's a top 15 job at minimum, and in my opinion a top ten job.

So what is Rick Barnes' strength? Recruiting. Now, you take away all of that, you had a guy who is declining, who's advanced numbers favors athletes and not coaching, and also had the fact he's taking over a bad roster and a program that is declining and you expect him to be in the tournament every year? The guy was barely making the tournament at ****ing Texas. The guy has proven and time and time again he cannot win with lesser players.

Basically, you just gave $2M for Cuonzo Martin results.

Actually, that's unfair to Cuonzo. He's made a sweet sixteen this decade.

I stopped taking you seriously when you compared him to Cuonzo. Barnes went to the elite 8 seven years ago. You seem like a fan who will not be happy with anything except championships. This is Tennessee, not UK.

How much will we be paying Barnes? Estimates? What was he making at texas? He's going to be pricey, and he has leverage as he knows we want him. Not to mention the higher assistant salaries.

28 years of experience in recruiting McDonalds AMs.
With that kind of talent the SEC will be a cake walk.
3 different schools, the same result. Perrenial NCAA participator.
Sorry. You're wrong on this one.

I think you're correct. I'm not a fan of the hire, but will support him while he is here. Which will be about 4-5 years. I hope I'm wrong, but when you look objectively at his body of work and recruiting then take away Texas from recruiting this has the potential to be really bad.

I'm happy with him. He should be able to recruit and add a little sorely needed prestige to our program.

I would rather have this hire than another shot in the dark. Kudos to the AD.

Cuonzo was ten seconds away from an Elite Eight. I don't see your point. My point was that people *****ed about Cuonzo, yet he's done something in the last seven years that Barnes hasn't and most people think Martin sucks.

I'm not trying to be a jackass, but go watch a Texas game. Go see if they are well coached. Because they are not. Go look at the advanced stats. All the good things are based on athletes. Go look what Texas people are saying. They are glad he is gone. Go look at his recruiting, where 60% of his recruits since 2002 come from Texas. Dave Hart failed to look at the process.

I see a lot of excitement about this hire but I don't get it. Coach Barnes had a great run at the other UT but he was just fired for doing what I have accused many coaches of doing....having a boat load of talent and not cashing in on it. If everyone is excited about just being OK then I get it but frankly it is time to take this program to the next level and this choice, to me, was more of a rush to quash the recruit fall out more than anything else.

I honestly don't care what Rick Barnes did twenty years ago at Clemson because it literally doesn't matter. Give me the last five years. Show me what he has done lately. Now take Texas into consideration and realize he constantly underachieved.

Well for one thing he got fired and wants another job. For another, his wife is an alumna. Another, he got a sizable buyout. And finally, most people would gladly take a pay cut to get away from all the freaks in Austin. Ending up in beautiful East Tennessee is icing on his cake. Heck, he might be paying us.

Rick Barnes had a preseason top ten team and finished with an 11 seed in the tournament. Doesn't sound like a guy I want running my program.

Very good hire, especially for where we are as a program. Barnes will settle the program, bring in talent and get TN mentioned in the basketball world for the RIGHT reasons...not for a write in campaign for a coach that wasn't coming back to force out a coach or for cheating coaches. JMO

I get what you are saying but if he gets us to the tourney on a consistent basis (which Cuonzo did not do) then I am happy. The tourney is a crapshoot outside of the top 5 teams. Who did you want us to hire that we could afford?
