so Peyton was an average player that became great at Tennessee? You guys remind me of that Burger King commercial where they quit selling the Whopper. Quit freaking, it was hyperbole to illustrate a point. Sure some average players have gotten better on the Hill, but really, is that our reputation? No.

Munoz was an all american too. Using those lists as validation is worthless.

We can definitely coach players, but personnel development has not been our strong suit over the past several years.

Munoz made a personal decision to quit football. His heart and desire were not there.

you mean after our all american left tackle went undrafted and was never going to see action at the next level, he decided to quit.

So who has that "reputation" of taking average and making them great? This should be good.

but this train has admittedly fallen back a bit, even amidst a slew of strong recruiting classes.

You can point to a lot of the NFL talent being kicked out of Tennessee before they graduate.

Banks, Benedict, Fellows, etc and then you have the Raymond Henderson debacle. Then the certified busts of Slick Shelley and the like.

But that falls on the coaches too.

I'd say that Danny Wuerfful winning the Heisman qualifies

Wuerrfel was so average in high school that he led his team to a Florida state title in his senior year and Spurrier saw fit to hire his high school coach to aid in his recruitment.

So who has that "reputation" of taking average and making them great?* This should be good.
Pat Hill at Fresno State, Dan Hawkins when he was at Boise State (Colorado is slowly on the rise under him), Jim Leavitt at USF, Rich Brooks at UK and Gary Patterson at TCU. But I wouldn't want anybody but Leavitt or Patterson at UT.

Over half of our offensive starters are 3* guys. All of the others are 4*.

I don't mean any offense to any player, because they've worked/played their a$$es off, but they're nowhere near close to being nationally recognized on athletic ability alone. Ainge wasn't even rated the best player coming out of Oregon, much less nationally in his position. Same with Foster. Same with that entire bunch.

Just for the sake of accuracy, Ainge was a 4-star and a nationally ranked pro-style QB. Top 10 I believe, or just barely outside the Top 10. But you are correct that we do have a number of 3-star players, such as Foster, that have improved and found some success.

I do think it is a fair assessment that we are not known, recently, for our extensive player development. But I think that area has improved vastly over the last two years.

I never said Ainge was a 3*, nor did I represent his ranking. Just keep in mind that even the mighty Trojans with their 2 Heisman QBs in the last couple of years can't turn John David Booty into solid gold. I know he was injured, but the skills and the coaching have to be there, in perfect harmony to create the kind of stuff people are talking about such as with Manning.

Pertinent to this discussion, are you saying coaching is the reason Munoz went undrafted?

no. I'm saying that he was massively overrated and was using that in refuting someone else pointing out Parker's accolades.

I'd say he was overrated from the start . . . but there's also a reason that Jimmy Ray Stephens is not on staff anymore.

You expect someone who starts as a freshmen to be a monster as a senior. Never happened with Munoz. I think there is a enough blame to go around there.

You know, normally I would agree. A guy like Malzahne or Quarles, however... the rare guys who wipe out their competition with x's and o's and a keen ability to motivate and develop talent. For instance, this Paul Smith guy, how many stars was he? I'm watching the Tulsa game and wondering how in the world Chavis would stop em'.:whistling:

Run the team bus off the road on the way to the game?

:dunno:

You said he was not nationally ranked at his position. I was just pointed out that as being incorrect.
