Cal, Auburn, and Vols all in NIT?

Funny the difference a year makes in how we view the NIT.

Some of CCM's staunchest defenders (who had 2 NIT teams out of 3 seasons) now are saying the NIT is a "disappointment". Interesting.

CDT assembled a class at the last minute that, despite not winning as many games as we all would have liked, are playing with more heart and grit than I ever saw during the CCM era. Post season or no post-season, let's give the guy a chance to have a few recruiting classes under his belt before we start signing petitions.

I can't speak for the others who supported Martin, but I've always hated the NIT. I think Martin's teams got screwed out of at least 1 NCAA tournament, but I didn't care about the NIT whatsoever when they were in it.

And yes, both of them were disappointments. The sad thing is those that worship Tyndall think making the NIT is something to be proud of but slammed Martin for making it there.

I like tyndall a lot so far but I think this season is a failure just like two of martins were.

I'm an ncaa or bust guy. But IMO some of the reason for being okay with the NIT this yr as opposed to the previous 3 is personnel and consistent effort from this team. In all three of the previous coaches yrs here their were stretches during the yr where his teams seemed disinterested and showed inconsistent effort. Personally, if this team makes it in the NIT I think they will play with 100% effort and not play with the woe is me way of thinking. jmo

Expectations fluctuate year to year for most reasonable fans. Sure some people view the NCAA tourney as the benchmark but I think many fans look at the roster and then set their expectations.

As the previous OP said, Tyndall built this team in a matter of weeks. Four players returned.

Josh Richardson - a very good player
Armani Moore - a bench player on the previous teams
Derek Reese - not an SEC level talent IMO
Robert Hubbs - a lot of talent but was a complete non factor before his injury.

Tyndall built the rest of the roster in April. What reasonable fan would think that this team is an NCAA tournament team?

I'm not a fan of the NIT in general, but IMO any reasonable fan had to look at the situation Tyndall was in and think that making the NIT would be a successful year considering the circumstances.

The SEC is much better than it has been over the last 3 years also. Something to keep in mind.

So who are these staunch Martin defenders saying this? And did they claim the NIT was awesome then, but sucks now?

I don't think u change your minimal goal based on expectations.....It doesn't mean Tyndall should be fired or that we need a different coach.

Most people preseason were predicting 15-17 wins and a NIT appearance, that is likely exactly the range in which this team will fall. Assuming that holds true, I don't think you consider the season an underachievement or overachievement, I think you could fairly say that Tyndall simply met expectations, but that we need to see it trend upwards going forward, this should be bottom.

This will likely be the lowest attendance since Buzz's last season, and interest seems to dwindling, add in the cloud hanging over and I'm not sure what another 16-17 win season and NIT trip would do for the fan base. Fair or not, Tyndall needs to find a way to field a team next year that can be more competitive and make a run to the NCAAT next season IMO.

And Martin's best player based on previous years was Tatum with a whopping 8.8 ppg. He had more guys contribute later on that first year, yes, but he also didn't run off as many, either. Tyndall could've tried to keep the 4 transfers (3 if you count before the school year), but he didn't. Chievous, Thompson, and Davis all could've helped this year. I understand that turnover happens with a new coach, but you can't use it as a crutch for one coach and then not use it for another. Neither coach had much going for them when they got here.

And if Tyndall finishes hire than 13th in the conference, why will people say he exceeded expectations, but Martin underachieved when he finished 2nd after being predicted to finish 13th? Makes no sense.

I just want him to be able to build a solid program for yrs to come.....I love him as a coach....now he just has to prove that he can get the guys in here to win with.

Agree. And there's a chance next year's team finishes with a worse record.

Personally, I think most reasonable fans were ok with Martin's first year. I think that the 2011-12 team overachieved in SEC play. There were some really disappointing losses that year but overall a good year. I think that the way the team played in the SEC Tourney vs Ole Miss left a bad taste in the mouth of fans.

I don't know what the record this year will end up being so I don't want to say that next years team will have a better record but.... I think next year's team will be much better.

By people, you mean fans on this board right?

I was ok with his first season except for the AP loss and the Ole Miss SECT loss.

I hope your right. Some players need to take gigantic strides, and the freshman better be a little better than advertised.

I don't think there will be a Tournament at all next season and 2016-2017 could be more of the same or possible NIT. CDT could be in trouble going into 2017-2018.

I think we have to beat both Vandy and USC to make it. The way we play at home... we've got some work left to do

Obviously Josh's departure leaves a massive void. But with every else returning, and hopefully making progress, I'd hope we can at least not regress.

Right now we are playing with 9 scholarship players. We return 8 of those guys, plus McGhee.

Of those 8 guys we are returning, almost all of them are getting their first SEC level experience this season. Lots of room for improvement if you ask me.

Depth should be a lot better. Just having 13 scholarship guys instead of 10 will help.

We are playing Carmichael and Owens now and if you ask me both really needed a redshirt. Especially Owens. No way that guy is SEC ready this year but he should be next season.

We could possibly add a quality transfer as well.
