I don't think this is the right place for it, but whatever.

I spent the last few months working on a film about Dean Smith. I've been in the business for a few years, and every single time I've worked on a project like this, you always find someone who has something bad to say about a guy, on or off the record. They say one thing for the cameras, another for you when you're packing the gear up. It happens. You live long enough, you're going to do or say something stupid that pisses people off.

But every single person we talked to who had any relationship with Coach Smith---directly, or indirectly---genuinely seemed to love the guy. And look, I'm a cynic: to a certain degree, everyone is a phony, and the more famous you are, the more real this is. But Dean didn't just talk that life. He did a lot of things that weren't very popular when he did them, but he did them anyway and didn't give a damn---it was what he believed in. He was always his own man, and never changed who he was out of fear.

It's hard to examine someone for so long and then admire them more than you did to start with. But that's the case with Coach Smith.

Anyway, just my two cents. RIP.

Actually a cool story bro

Thanks for sharing

I feel like there should be a countdown clock somewhere for when the first Circle of Life drill happens this spring.

I want to see Mackenzie versus Jack Jones. It's been a long time since we've brought in big boys with mean streaks like that.

Jack is giving up about 50 lbs to Khalil right now.

I'd rather see McKenzie vs Richmond :)

Richmond is only 270 isn't he?

I hope by mid year KMack Tuttle Williams and obrien are regularly rotating without much drop-off. We will probably have the top DL in the SEC if our freshmen DT can make an impact. We already have the best DE duo in the country.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting.

There was another great man in sports and life that passed in the last 24 hours at the same age - the golfer, Billy Casper. 51 wins, 3 majors. Married to his wife for 62 years and they had 11 children, of which 6 were adopted. RIP to both Dean and Billy.

He is probably from Skullbone, TN. It's close to Jackson yes. It's actually a little famous. Cool ass Skullbone license plate on my Toyota 4x4 back in the day. Used to have a big music festival every year. Bike rally maybe.

Thats close to a small place called Trezvant isnt it? Spent the first couple years of my life in Trez.

It is. They're both in Carroll County, if memory serves me right. I almost got hit by a tornado in McKenzie back in '97 back when I was stomping around that part of the country.

SIAP

Preseason ESPN computer poll taking last season stats and returning starters and coaching effect to give a fairly good idea for next year.

Ohio State at top of Preseason FPI - ESPN

Vols at #14. Actually sounds about right to me. We play @#2, 9, 10, 15, @24 and @27.

8-4 or 9-3 should be attainable

If those ratings project with any accuracy, Oklahoma at #15 makes for an extremely tight game in Knoxville.

Maybe on a neutral field. How many points is the home field worth?

Usually it's a standard 3pts. I don't know how Okie travels though and the extra distance could have an impact. And I would think that there's more home field advantage earlier in the season when you're still working the kinks out and getting your players used to noise and silent counts.

What the...you mean Jackson?

West, Middle, East, and sometimes Upper East TN....never heard "Midwestern" Tennessee. LOL

I'm about an hour East from Jackson. While I admit the term midwestern tennessee is unusual I find it to be slightly more accurate. Most people would say it's West TN.

Skullbone, TN is indeed the root of my username. It is somewhat famous originally for barnuckle boxing and much later for the music park, but I have never lived there. As a child I did, however, drink many Chocolate Soldiers there from the store passing through. I never had the liscense plate, but I did rock the tshirt and trucker hat back in the day. Good times.

If each spot in the ranking is worth .5 pt and home field is worth 3pts that would make us +9 to Bama, -.5 to UGA, -1 with Ark, -3.5 to OK, -2 @Mizzou, -3.5 @UF, -16 over the Cocks, -14@UK, &-22 vs Vandy. Pretty close?

Sounds about right to me. Very close to how you do the Sagarin projections.
