No matter what we think, Butch believes DeBord offers the best chance to:

1. Win championships
2. Reach his goal for staff continuity

I'll ride with it

Two things:
Why does everyone leave Kerbyson out on the OL discussion? He was arguably our best OL last year and played out of position at the hardest slot (LT). Will he play LT, RT or get back to Guard, his natural position?
Next, who is going to be the QB coach? DeBord is known more for his OL prowess, if I'm not mistaken.

Hopefully, KK will start at one of the guard spots this year. If the tackles do not step up, then he may have to play out of position again. But IMO, he will be one of our top 5.

This is it. Not many up and comers or big time guys are just willing to drop their offense and coach a new one that they have to learn.

Debord taught CBJ at Central Michigan and gave him his first shot as an OC. He is not learning a strange new offense, much of this offense is his. I am not saying he should be our OC, but he will not be learning some foreign offense that he has never heard about.

I understand your opinion on Crowder, but the line seemed to really suffer when he was out vs. Missouri and Vanderbilt. While I don't think he's the strongest, I think he does a solid job calling the protections.

I agree - he brings a lot more to the position than many realize.

Here's some film of Butch's offense under Debord at CMU. Does that look like our offense to anybody?

In the limited amount of film, many of the pass routes are similar to ours. Granted the qb was not in the shotgun, but if you will recall in 2003 very few offenses ran the shotgun exclusively.
Several times Carr and the announcer mentioned the no huddle, again in 2003 very few teams ran no huddle. So though it was not exactly our offense, it did have mostly one back sets which again were not used by as many teams in 2003 as today.
You might want to go check out the video of MI vs FL from 2007 were Debord uses many of the principles used in our offense against FL.

Can you imagine what it would be like now that we have been running this offensive for these last few years and hire someone to put in a brand new offense when its starting to click and a QB that can run it? The dude has been coaching for 30 yrs with a NC and NFL experience.

I to am going to ride with it until its shown its not working. Welcome Coach to VOL NATION!!

Ha, you do so..I would too.

Had this come up in a master's class not long ago...

Nepotism implies a relationship between family members whereas cronyism implies favoritism shown to friends, acquaintances, and colleagues...at least according to perhaps the most monotone, boring professor I ever had.

Other fun words that are used incorrectly as if they are interchangeable:

eager/anxious

bring/take

After crunching the recruiting numbers, I wanted to give you guys a cursory look at what adding another top 5 class does to the talent based predictions for 2015. Understand that averaging four years of rival classes yields a prediction rate approaching 70% in general and over 80% for UT under Jones. These numbers do not reflect Jones' "coach effect" which is positive overall but negative at UT.

1) this will be the most talented UT team to take the field since 2005, and about the 13th most talented team in the nation.

2) UT gained ground on downward trending UGA and UF, but didn't overtake either.

3) UT is now more talented than Oklahoma.

4) Texas A&M actually jumped UT in these talent averages pushing the Vols back a spot overall in the SEC.

5) Another top 5 class next year could likely jump Tennessee back on top of the SEC east and potentially top 3 in SEC and top 5 nationally. There are currently 2 classes in Tenn's average that were right around 20, bringing the average down. Those need to be flushed before we see big jumps in these numbers.

6) looking at each of the Vols 2015 regular season opponents ranked by talent averages would indicate a record of 9-3 (5-3 SEC). Adjusted for uncertainty puts the over/under at about 7.5 games (4.5 SEC).

I'll clean this up and write more later, with some visual aides.

Daj, good to hear from you again. Do you have a total list somewhere of the above with the top 20 teams ranked in order?

If the OL is better this season watch out. I think Butch knows this and that's the whole reason for hiring Debord. I think gameday will be a relief for the OL after practicing with our defensive line.

I'm resigned to the hire but you make a good point. Familiarity with the system is what these kids need most. It got them to a bowl win and got 3 stud QBs and a 5* WR to come to UT.

Interesting tidbit from Rob Lewis about the SEC getting involved in Richmond's recruitment down the stretch to make sure things were on the up and up.

I'd love to know the details behind that.

If DeBord adds at least a little I formation to our offense I may tear up a little From so much joy.

Also, I fully expect a horric flashback to occur when we run the first jet sweep of the season.

I was anti-DeBord but he brings many of the things we had been asking for.

1. anyone besides Bajakian
2. power run game
3. oline coaching
4. flexible (at least if you buy the UF bowl game story about him going to Carr)
5. better plan to beat UF (see 4)
6. protecting lead (MI won a lot of close games which could be good or bad)

That should be standard practice for any recruit Ole Miss is involved with.

I think the help this hire gives to the OL is overblown. If rumors are true that he and Sheridan will coach QBs, then he isn't coaching OL.

And no good head coach would allow another coach to meddle in another coach's position. No way Debord is looking over Mahoney's shoulder.

any chance Debord as OC is a smokescreen for Mahoney to take the CMU HC job? Debord as OL coach and a power hire at OC?

I liked Coach Bajakian fine - I think he had a **** job to deal with last year with so many freshmen, a ****ing awful O Line, and not a great answer at QB. As many flashes as Dobbs showed at the end, his accuracy was spotty.

But I do like DeBord for all the points you listed.

I also understand the DeBord hate. He isn't an up-and-comer or spread offense visionary that many lust over. But these kinds of coaches come and go in a matter of a few years. I'm a big beliver in staff continuity - I'd take a Chavis over a Wilcox any day of the week.

Well, since all we're thinking about is staff changes, I'm really surprised we didn't have an opening for Defensive Quality Control staffer Chase Gibson. In case he's not familiar to you, perhaps this will refresh your memory.

I figured he might want to jump ship.

Can't remember which game that was but I remember feeling bad for the guy. That said, sometimes a good arse chewing is needed to get people refocused on what needs to get done.
