I'm kind of weirdly pumped about DeBord. Calling plays isn't that crazy or difficult. We need somebody who will commit to the running game and help get this oline to start playing like some animals. Dobbs has the ability to create something out of nothing if all else goes wrong.

Specific coaches in this system don't mean as much as they did when Dooley was here in my opinion. He never had a clear direction and the team leadership was spread too thin among the staff. Under Butch, we have a clear and dominant alpha male leader at the helm with a clear philosophy on how he wants things done. You don't join the staff at TN now to change the culture, you come to join the culture that's already there and already working.

Debord brings a ton of experience to the offensive side of the ball. This is a great situation for a guy like him to walk into. He is incredibly lucky to get an opportunity like this. Not sure there are any other big time head coaches in the country that would give him this chance.

Butch has been around him enough to know whether or not he can do the job. He obviously has a ton of respect for him. If Debord was incompetent, Butch would have known that from working with him and probably wouldn't be bringing him in to this once in a lifetime situation he's created here.

Let's be real. With the talent we have, Butch could have hired whoever he wanted. I think that's exactly what he did. I'm down with it.

this post deserves to be recognized. Agree 100%

Chris Fowler is being replaced by Rece Davis on College Gameday next year.

Weird. Must have caused too many trailer park frenzies.

Apparently it was partly fowler's decision. He wanted to focus on play by play and cut down on his travel.

Espn did it to keep davis

I don't listen/watch much Finebaum, but happened to catch a few mins on tv this afternoon. A caller from TN asked specifically about DeBord.

Finebaum was pretty optimistic about it coming from the angle that DeBord could fit in well with the coaching "team" at UT, and that ability to mesh well and work together with the rest of the coaching team could be more important than other factors.

I thought it was an interesting angle to look at.

We've got some seriously good talent accumulating at UT right now, no need to get all "Sunseri" up in here.

Continuity of style and personality, and good mojo amongst the coaches. Just thought that was interesting.

Yes, he warmed up to him as the day progressed. I guess they did some research, because at first all he knew was he coached at CM and didn't have a winning record/and the thing with the Olympics.

TBH, if Bama or Florida or Georgia had hired Michigan's Olympic sports administrator as OC, we would be ROTFL. It may turn out to be a decent hire, but it looks foolish for a program with high expectations, on the verge of breaking out, to make such a questionable hire.

SIAP, but Brent Hubbs will be undergoing significant surgery and will be away from Volquest for a while. Prayers and best wishes to he and his family.

Just wondering if there were any more details about Hubbs' surgery. Will pray for him and his family.

"On Kamara - "This is a home run back."

On Chance Hall - "Very large Human."

On Richmond - "He's everything you're looking for at offensive tackle. He's an NFL talent. Now we have to get him there and develop him."

On Stewart - "Another very large human. He would come to camp and compete because he was bored. No one even knew he was coming."

On Williams - "God bless me. He's one extravagant kid but he's one he'll of a player. He's good at whatever he does and he'll tell you about it, too."

On Townsed - "He's the no. 1 punter in the country. He's a weapon for us."

The word is that debord was being approached by nfl teams for some positions next season.

Ppl need to stop acting like we hired a middle school position coach. The guy has plenty of experience/knowledge of the game. He also is a guy that Butch trusts enough to put his job on the line for.

Let's give the guy a chance

Among many other factors, I wonder how significant it was to CBJ that DeBord has also coached on a national championship team. CBJ clearly is gunning to win it all. He may want more coaches that know what it takes to make it through a championship season like that.

Unless Debord has just gone completely off the reservation in his time away from football, I find it more likely than not that he'll be a good hire at Tennessee. He's obviously a personality fit with Butch, who has never had an offensive coordinator other than Bajakian. He brings a ton of experience to the table - like Steve Stripling levels of experience. This guy has been around the game a long time at multiple levels. He knows his football. He has experience with both the pro-style O and the West Coast/ZBS attack. He'll run the playbook Jones gives him to run while implementing his own tweaks to improve it. And most importantly, he won't be afraid to run the damn ball.

Why is this the most important thing? Well, as fun as watching MACtion/Air Raid passing attacks can be, the fundamental, proven championship formula is still just as relevant now as it was a century ago:

1. Play physical, fast, suffocating defense.
2. Maintain an efficient offense headlined by a dominant power running game and punctuated with effective downfield passing (yes, both of these are possible from the spread - and if the QB can run too, even better).
3. Put yourself in the best possible field position with special teams.
4. ??????
5. Profit

We can spin it many ways, but DeBord is a questionable hire-- not an unsound one, per se, but a controversial one. The cost of Butch's staying 100% within his comfort zone is to squander the opportunity to bring in new ideas and a fresh perspective that could actually enhance Butch's system while working within it.

It's possible to question someone's choices while giving them a chance to play out-- and that's what many of us are doing.

But what would we say if they hired a national championship winning OC with NFL experience?
