Butch Stones is right... To hire his mentor who hasn't OC'd in 9 years is a very ballsy move. If offense improves, then all is good. But if it's stagnant and conservative then this will bring massive heat to Butch and DeBord. Really hoping for Sanford. And not a quality QB coach either. Lots of risk here. Butch has done extremely well in a lot of areas, but his offense in 2 years has shown nothing to be overly excited about. Really hope DeBord can bring it to life. Still a lot to prove that this offense can take over a game.

Don't like the hire, but have to support it. Butch has brought this program back to life from some long treacherous years. Lead the way Butch...

Debord was HC at Central Michigan from 2000-2005 or so.

Butch was his RB coach for two years then OC for 3 years.

While there they put in the offense TN now runs so the offense won't change.

When Debord got fired as CMU's head coach and went back to Michigan he went back to running Lloyd Carr's offense.

His and Butch's offense is what we run now and what Butch has run his entire 8 year coaching career.

The hire is very deBoring and I will wait and see how he is at calling plays (my main concern) but I am VERY happy there is no terminology change and he can just come in and provide his OL expertise and help that group.

Big ? is calling plays and will just have to wait and see how it goes this fall.

If it is what CBJ wants, then let's ride...I trust him.

Everyone thought Janzeck would be terrible and he's improving our D by leaps and bounds and did it this year with no DL starters returning.

Wait, DeBord and Butch ran our offense at CMU? Noooooo way. I have read on here that he has no experience running anything but an I-formation offense.

The FF is anticlimactic after reading those OM boards. If the Klansmen were getting DeBord, the internet would melt with the fiery intensity of their wrath.

LMAO. Actually, so many actual explanations that are grounded in coaching and winning football games. Ignorance that it is nepotism is what has no explanation.

So you honestly think Debord was the absolute best OC candidate for this team? You truly don't believe Butch and Debord's friendship had anything to do with this? If so, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

That's my favorite OL prediction but I just don't see CBJ benching Crowder. No offense, but he was somewhat disappointing last year imo.
Disagree.

In 6 games with Dobbs, we had 2 poor games on offense.

Crowder missed those two games.

I don't feel like that's a coincidence.

I'm curious as to how much offensive success can be attributed to a) a QB that can actually run, b) a QB that can actually read the defense, and c) players with enough talent and training to properly execute. Since many of the plays in the system have numerous QB called options, we may be overstating the OC's impact. Seems like much of Gus Malzahn's offensive brilliance was running the same dang triple option play over and over...with enough talent to execute it well.

CBJ was OC Debord's last two seasons. But we don't know how much of a hand Debord had in that offense or even how similar it is to CBJ's current style of offense. All of that was over a decade ago and well before CBJ worked with Rich Rod at WVU, so I'd be really surprised if what they ran those two years was the offense our offense runs currently.

Out of all the candidates who would have no problem throwing away their playbooks and exclusively using Butch's, yes, I do think DeBord was probably the best hire he could make.

To be fair, the list of proven OCs who fit that bill is very small.

Sorry I didn't get your approval to post such displeasure on a public message board.
Sorry that I expect better for Tennessee football than a bargain bin buy at dollar tree.
Sorry that I expect better from Butch and this will intimately sink his ship.

This dude is in full on meltdown mode. It has the funny.

I think you are the one that is being incorrectly swayed by oceanfront property. Due to the fact that you think you actually have any idea (philosophically and fundamentally) what OC would lead to the most wins for this football team. CBJ knows exactly what offense he wants to install that will lead to the most wins, in his opinion. And it is his team. So he is hiring an OC that gives the team the best chance to win using his offense. So no I do not think that some young play-caller with his own playbook that would come in and change the offense to put their own stamp on it is what will lead this team to the most wins. I think that is what would make emotional insecure fans be able to beat their chest and feel good about themselves because their team swayed this stud OC to come to their team. And more importantly, what I understand that most on here do not is that we as fans have no idea who is or is not the right fit to be OC and help our offense score the most points. People that think they know that are very ignorant of the process of installing and implementing an offense have severely over-simplified how it works.

I am not that old, and I learned a while back to at least wait and see what the product is. 99.9% of us know nothing about the workings of a high level program and what people will fit best in each position. How can I criticize someone when first hired without seeing results? It's a message board, so people want to ***** at something.

Sounds like Mahoney could be on the chopping block...

Brice on if there are more changes with Debord hire.

Does this automatically mean a full-time guy is departing or being asked to leave? No, but some staff members have been given a "referendum" to improve.

I don't think he knows what referendum means...

They're going to poll the entire staff on whether or not some should be retained?

I believe he meant ultimatum. Gosh VQ needs an English major on staff.
