Recruiting Forum Football Talk XVII

I was too drunk to know what I was doing is the dumbest defense

I didn't hear that one. Read his attorney's statements that their defense was vandy set up a culture where this was acceptable, so how can you fault an impressionable kid for falling prey to this overwhelming culture.

Ok. You guys continue to act like there's not a visibility oligarchy here. You guys just assume I'm a FF poster because I've been here for a while and don't post in the RF often, but it's because you guys will literally not respond to something unless it's A. Groundbreaking B. Controversial or C. Coming from someone that posts in the recruiting forum 20 times a day or D. A cutesy combination of gifs and pictures of Butch. I know you're trying to keep the drivel from the FF from seeping into here, but I've ready every page of every Football talk, haven't missed an announcement in 5 years and I sit here and bite my tongue while people lump pot smokers in with crack heads, question Butch's ability, and act like American Sniper was the greatest thing to happen to America (it's just a coincidence that it came out the same time there is a heighten sense of international unrest. If you tell a bunch of people "it's us versus them and here's a story about the good guys" they're going to say it's a good movie. It's funny, because I know football players personally and they were literally on volnation the other day laughing their asses off at vols fans fretting over Preston Williams. But I've never brought inside information because A. recruiting forum wouldn't care since it's not from Orange Venom and LWS, and B. because I can talk to someone in the football organization without spaghetti falling out of my pockets and screaming "GIVE ME INSIDE INFO SO THESE INTERNET TOUGH GUYS THINK I'M COOL"

The point is, this recruiting forum elitism makes browsing this website really unenjoyable. I have to tell my friends everything that's going on because they can't stand how hostile this place is. I know I'm sounding hostile right now but the vocal minority is still a minority and I gotta do something to reach your short attention spans and maybe this won't always be a "VFL VIP boys club" forever

Ehhhh I agree that a lot of people lick the toes of Swanson a bit too much, and I used to make somewhat similar posts about what you're saying, minus the whole being butthurt part of course. So I think you should chill man.

I'm not a sheep... Does that mean I have groupies then?!

Commentary that long on the social and political structure of a football message board is one of the saddest things I've seen.

Such conflicting emotions. I'm going to be meh about the hire. At the same time I'm think we'll dang if he is Butchs too target hands down then I don't want him to miss on him because there has to be a reason he is so set on him.

I feel better after seeing the Michigan offense bs Florida in 2008 game but I'm still meh about it.

I guess when you think of our momentum and talent returning your just wanting a big rock star to come in here without realizing teamwork is what makes this staff so good. One team with everyone in the building driving the same message all the way down the line. You bring in a rockstar and that tends to rock the boat and can destroy what you built.

I felt worse about the Jancek hire to be honest and that turned out ok.

I'm with you on this. It's nothing to throw a party about. But for some reason I almost feel like that's a good thing.

It's like whenever the NY Giants or Jets draft an offensive lineman in the first round and all their fans boo because they wanted a QB or WR (or at least somebody they had heard of). But sometimes that offensive lineman turns out to be an anchor and helps you run the ball better.

Sometimes the sexy pick is not the right pick.

Butch has earned the right to hire who he wants.

I'm gonna sheep it up and keep on cheering either way.

That doesn't make sense. Peyton played offense while Chavis coached defense. Debord was the OC so yeah he coached Jake Long. Debord also is an OL expert so pretty sure he had a big part in that

That's why I picked the extreme example. But the point remains. DeBord had his own job responsibilities, and while I'm sure he took some part in coaching Long, he wasn't responsible for molding him. Just like Chavis sat in film study with Peyton and the appropriate offensive coaches to help dissect defenses.

DeBord wasn't even the position coach for Jake Long while he was at Michigan. That's almost like saying "All John Chavis has to say to quarterbacks is I coached Peyton Manning at UT." Not quite that extreme, but just about as relevant.

You honestly think a OC with Offensive Line expertise did not help coach the Oline?

ditto but I reserve the right to poke at this hire until it is official.

Really glad to see the guilty verdict. I hope that this opens some eyes to these guys and deters these types of actions in the future.

The blame game didn't work, people need to realize in life there are consequences to your actions. Vandenberg needs to get more than the maximum amount of time. What a douche.

He had more charges than Batey. He will get more time.

You're both right. His position coach deserves the credit, but having an OC with OL coaching experience had to help.

That's the most exciting thing about Debord to me, helping Mahoney out.

But if Freak or Ron had posted it, you and the rest of the volnation sheep would be sitting there with your thumbs in your mouths saying "tell us what to think now. I must fit the mold of every other volnation fanboy so I don't feel like this is another place I don't fit in to"

You must not know me very well. I think for myself.

I heard patrick brown talking on the radio today. He said he didn't think we would pay $1 mil for a coordinator because it would put the rest of the staff so far behind and might upset some of the coaches here already. He said they were getting a bump but didn't think they going to get a bump to bring them up to that level either. He also said he thinks someone will be named before visits this weekend. TIFWIW

Would you say that Lloyd Carr coached him at all or just the o-line coach?

Look, I realize a coaching staff doesn't build silos around respective positions, especially when there is that underlying expertise. His point: All he has to say is "I coached Jake Long." My point: well, that may not be a lie, but it's not very precise.

As for Carr, sure, he was Jake Long's head coach. So yes, he coached him. But considering Carr's expertise was defense, I would say that his contribution to Long's development was marginal.
