Apparently Butch will be on 104.5 ESPN talking about the OC search in about 25 minutes.

Really doesn't matter what he says, it'll be smoke and mirrors as usual. After he said "first and foremost" he was looking for a candidate that has coached QBs I have my doubts considering it appears DeBord is his frontrunner.

We can do so much better than Debord. If he is hired hopefully Azzanni gets co-oc. I think he will make a good oc one day.

Ron Swanson I am hoping and praying that what you posted is exactly what's going on- was it from a respected and legit poster on VQ? Just when that calmed me down now we get this other double bad news that I am hoping is NOT accurate- don't want to lose Azzani! Has anyone else heard anything about Azzani? Don't know why he would just up and leave especially if he doesn't get the CMU job.... My nerves!!!!

I'm not sure of the posters history.

I doubt Debord would be worse than Jake at calling plays. I'd just be disappointed that we have the money and talent to get a proven, top oc/QB coach, and instead we get a guy who was partly responsible for Lloyd Carr getting run off with his awful offense despite having elite talent.

Also, we'd have no QB coach at all, with a freshman QB situation that just about any qb coach would die for.

I'd rather have Debord than Azzanni, this is not a training school for new OCs.

And maybe Debord could help out Mahoney.

There are two discussions here, the academic discussion and the practical discussion.

As a threshold matter, I tend to agree with you on most accounts. And, as I stated, I haven't seen anything specifically that I think rises to the level of this discussion, especially about DeBord. What I was saying is that people tend to believe that what you do here is anonymous and that opinions are somehow protected speech.

As to the general academic discussion: All that is generally required is a communication of information that is false and damages someone. With a public figure (such as a coach or player) the plaintiff might have to prove that the falsehood was communicated with malice (that is that you knew what you said was wrong but said it anyway). Case law and modern interpretation of these issues show that even when someone says 'it is just my opinion', or the statement was made as an opinion, they are not necessarily immune or protected. Further, slander regards the spoken word. Libel is generally anything that is written, including message board posts and even TV broadcasts (as they are generally considered as transcripts and not spoken word).

The practical discussion is that none of that matters. Few on this board can likely afford the defense that would be required against a defamation lawsuit. Simply by suing you, the plaintiff can force you to spend thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars. Thus, the pound of flesh has been extracted even if the case never goes to court. The fact that many on here couldn't afford the defense also makes it less likely to spend the money to sue them to begin with, but I wouldn't advise on using that as a shield.

Further, as this basically a permanent public record, I caution anyone against making bigoted or careless statements, especially about drinking or drug use. Like it or not, your current or future employers could intentionally or accidentally stumble across something said here, and that could very well make one as unhireable as many on volnation believes being a bald fat white guy makes a coach.

Just food for thought.

I'm an old guy so the drug thing really doesn't interest me. Also, this board is pretty anonymous so unless someone wants to remain that way it's not that difficult. And, one other thing I never said there were not any consequences only that the stuff posted on this and other message boards should never be taken seriously. Anybody that does is really only fooling themselves.

My thinking is nobody has tried to hire Debord in over two years. He hasn't been in charge of an offense since 2007. Azzanni has a school interested in him as head coach. I just feel like his ceiling is higher.

Debord's resume for coaching oline is a lot better than Mahoney's. I could make myself excited about that.

I got more that debord really didn't want to coach the past couple of years. Just because your not coaching doesn't mean you couldn't get a job.

This hire is not going to be about money. It's going to be about Butch Jones comfort level with the person he hires. I firmly believe this to be the case. He's not gonna go out of the box for a sexy name.
