Chris Kyle: American hero or

read a couple of post on this and now your quoting when you didn't have the slightest idea it happened two days ago..

way to go

The question in the OP isn't soldiers in general, its specific to Chris Kyle

I didn't start the conversation about soldiers in general, I simply addressed certain points made by a certain post. If you want to cry about me going off topic, you better do it for everyone else participating in the discussion as well.

No, but Vol-in-AR is correct.

Read up a bit more on the trial involving the parties in My Lai before tossing it out there blindly. There's a reason the verdict came back the way it did.

And FTR, I'm torn on the whole thing myself.

Cute, but again, I guess you or Obby aren't going to point out where I was being disrespectful, because it doesn't exist. You're just being petulant.

Your condescension and ill informed analysis of the situation he faced are plenty. No other disrespect required.

I too am torn however, until I watch the movie and read the book, I will err on the side of respect.

What the hell are you talking about? I stated multiple times that I couldn't judge him on his actions because I'm not at all informed on all the details of his service. Now you're just making **** up.

Yikes, has this derailed.

Movie was better than expected, but those without a clue on the whole story are still left without a clue. Perhaps that's a good thing.

$50M is not $500B. Do you know what the difference is? $50M is what A Rod makes in 2 years. $500B will get countries out of debt. $500B could make everyone in a metropolis a millionaire.

$50M is paltry.

When the average Pakistani or Afghani lives the life of a peasant dirt farmer I'd say $50 mill isn't paltry. How much do you have in your bank account?

I read the whole wikipedia article on it, nothing else though. I'm sorry, but I don't take it kindly when I'm being told here that I've been disrespectful of soldiers when I've done nothing of the sort. My grandfather was a pilot in WWII and I'm proud of his service. For some reason, people here are acting like I called Kyle a mass murderer, when all I said was that no human being is above criticism.

1) you haven't read the book.
2) you haven't seen the movie.
3) you admittedly know little more than what you have gleaned from the media reports on the book.

You and I are both the same in this respect. However, I err on the side of respect until I find out differently. You, on the other hand, go the other direction claiming you don't understand the automatic respect given these guys. To me, that is disrespectful.

Edit: Wiki, good for you.

1) I don't think you should form your opinion based on a film.

2) I was very specific in saying I respect their position, so again, I'm not sure where that's coming from. I said I didn't understand the hero worship based on little to no information, which goes far beyond respect and creates the aura of immunity to criticism.

Why do you feel the need to do so? Why is criticism needed? You have already stated you know nothing of this man. Yet?????

Because people in this thread were getting butthurt as all hell when anyone posted something even slightly detracting of Kyle, and I posed the question "should soldiers be above criticism?" That's how all of this started.

There's no disrespect there. He just doesn't blindly follow people. If anything, I respect that more.

The answer to the "should soldiers be above criticism" would be no, they are not.

But there is a huge disconnect in fair criticism and overtly hostile criticism of anyone wearing olive drab (or ABU, ACU, UCP, MARPAT and NWUPAT these days) as seen in the original post. And sure, people are going to get defensive when some slimy reporter that's never worn the uniform of their country and dedicated their life to a cause calls one of our brothers a "mass murderer." And once that defensive mode sets in, we tend to get protective of said individual against all criticism.

Don't take it personal Mercy. It's something that's going to be done.

It seems like you need to grow up because you can't tolerate people with differing opinions than yours.

I have no issue with differing opinions, when they are backed up by facts

I had to provide you with the only fact you can hang your hat on, that not all military are considered hero's example Lt Calley

but this thread isn't about general hero worship of the military, it was specific to Chris Kyle's accomplishments in protecting fellow service members

I'm not about to base my entire hero decision based on one aspect of a person's life. You really are looking at this with some SERIOUS bias

I am biased, because I can appreciate the dedication, effort, and sacrifice Kyle had to make to achieve what he did.

The other side of the equation, is not just the 160 bad guys he killed, but the 100's and 1,000 of lives he saved because of taking the shot

the OP, asked a specific question, if you don't think he's a hero, you are entitled to your opinion

I don't know the guy, never met him but would lay some serious cash that he would think it's silly people are debating his hero status.

Ok. Start following your own last statement.
