"I think Cecil Cherry was a good player, but he is a purely in-the-box, first-down, second-down type of linebacker," Simmons said. "He's a thumper, but he's not a guy who's going to give you a lot of versatility in coverage. I think Darrin Kirkland is a kid who does give you that versatility. He's an athletic guy. I think that was a really nice pickup there by the Vols."
Per Barton Simmons, Kirkland is an "upgrade" over Cherry:
I think most of us thought this anyway, but a little backup never hurts.
He's definitely more athletic and rated considerably higher on both 247 and Rivals. I was disappointed they missed on him the first time around as I think he moves well enough to where he could have even played OLB in college. Things worked out nicely for TN here.
