Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XVI

I know it's uncomfortable to talk about kids getting 'processed' or leaving because they're just not going to see the field here but it's often best for all involved. That said, it's also the dirty side of roster rebuilding in that some may wind up being encouraged to leave rather than to think about their options rationally/consider their football futures. However, early 'processing' is exactly how Saban built Bama into what it is today. Their roster was pitiful and needed to be flipped.

I don't like it when it's a shove out the door rather than asking kids to think about their future playing time and future in general but rebuilding (if you're serious about it) will always have casualties and is a necessary evil these days. I just hope our coaching staff has the players' futures in mind as well as the teams and TBH, I think they do.

We've seen others get placed at good schools - recruits who couldn't get in academically and the like and I do think that's more how this staff operates. It seems they go out of their way to make sure players who leave find good schools where they'll see the field.

Yeah. Peterman, Bowles(If not already gone), and 1 or 2 more somewhere.

Pretty sure Bowles transferring to another school has already been reported by at least one legit source. IIRC, it was an in-state school (I want to say UTC but I can't quite recall which one it was).

Great post and you're correct.

Those that think of "processing" as Butch pushing the player out the door against their will couldn't be more wrong.

Often times, the player knows that he will not have a good opportunity to start until maybe his junior or senior year and he would rather go somewhere smaller where he can continue to pursue his education while getting much more PT than he would at Tennessee.

Everyone has Saban as the poster boy of processing but that obviously hasn't hurt him in recruiting yet. You want to know why? Because every big time HS recruit thinks they can cut it at the next level but they really don't know until they get into school.

Yep...both you and UTProf are dead on. Processing isn't an evil thing...vast majority of the time it's mutual on both sides.

I believe the staff tries to find them a place outside the SEC where they can do well in school and also stand a good chance of getting plenty of playing time.

Yeah, telling a player he may not get much playing time and offering to help him find another school doesn't sound bad at all to me. I agree the coaches and players can't really know who is going to work out until the players spend time in the program.

I'm glad our coaches are confident enough in our existing roster and the players they have coming in to do this. The future is bright!

Perhaps the biggest sign that we are back is the "processing" aspect. I remember when our fanbase complained about other programs doing it. Those programs are always in the top 10.

We're close to flipping a terrible roster. This will settle down next year.

I think one of the problems is when kids hear "you'll have a great opportunity for playing time", they hear "you'll get early playing time" instead of "you'll have a great opportunity to show that you deserve playing time"

I do too. I don't think it's a coincidence that so many of those who've left under this staff or have been the victim of poor grades/academic issues preventing admission often wind up at good schools outside the SEC.

While I hate losing kids, I do think our staff goes about this the right way and in a way that's best for everyone.

At some point in time, the goal should be to have enough depth that no one starts until his junior or senior year. We will really be a powerhouse when that day comes.

Yep. I hate to keep bringing up Alabama but look at how they do things. The only freshmen than start or see significant PT for them are the super elite talents. The rest ride the bench for a couple of years then get 1 or 2 years of playing and either graduate or go to the NFL. Rinse and repeat. That's why you see them constantly reloading rather than rebuilding with down seasons every 2 or 3 years.

All of the backs that are not redshirting will get reps. Hurd may start, but all will contribute. This keeps all the backs fresh and strong over the course of the season.

This, plus they need to watch how many carries they give Hurd considering his injury history
