Dont get the wrong idea about Kendall Bussey based on his quickness, versatility and short stature, or the recruiting analysts who occasionally have described him as an all-purpose back.
Three-star running back Kendall Bussey, who committed to Tennessee on Friday, is ranked the nation's No. 347 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite.
The three-star senior running back from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, who announced his commitment to Tennessee on Friday, undoubtedly possesses some of the characteristics of an all-purpose back. But 247Sports director of scouting Barton Simmons said that label doesnt exactly fit Bussey.
Im not sure that really is an accurate or fair representation of what he kind of is, Simmons said of Bussey, whos ranked the nations No. 347 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite for the 2015 class.
While hes got a shiftiness to his game and he is capable of catching the ball out of the backfield and doing a lot of things, hes a really stout, physical, thick kid when you see him in person.
For that reason, I think hes the type of guy that can probably fill a lot of different roles in a running-back corps. I think he can be an every-down back. I think he probably is the type of guy that starts his career as a third-down type of back and then can sort of develop into an every-down type of guy.
Hes short but hes a big kid, and I think that his running style reflects that.
His running style also could make him the 5-foot-8, 205-pound Bussey a good fit for Tennessees spread offense, Simmons said.
I think hes got the ability to protect the quarterback, Simmons said. I think hes got the ability to catch the football, and hes a guy that can sort of dip in and out from behind those big offensive linemen and be effective that way.
His versatility, his center of gravity, I think those are sort of factors that are going to allow him to be a nice fit for what Tennessee does offensively.
Bussey joined four-star running back Alvin Kamara of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College and three-star prospect Rocky Reid of Concord (N.C.) High School as the third running back in the Vols class.
Simmons said Bussey, much like Kamara and Reid, seems to be capable of contributing early at Tennessee. But Simmons said the depth of the Vols running-back class might allow them to take their time developing Reid and Bussey.
The good news for Tennessee is, even though theyre getting a couple of high-school backs that have the type of frame that makes you think that they could contribute early, I think those guys are going to have the opportunity to sort of develop and take their time, because Alvin Kamara, I think hes got the potential to be a stud immediately, Simmons said.
Thats a backfield thats got a lot of depth in this class, and theyre all guys that are going to look the part on the field. And, because you have one juco and two high-school guys, I think it works with regard to just sort of the spacing and the depth on the roster.
I think theyre all guys that are going to be able to contribute in the future.
