Hurd disciplined internally, will play in bowl

Freshman running back Jalen Hurd has been punished internally but will play in Tennessees bowl game despite being cited earlier this month for underage drinking, Vols coach Butch Jones said after Thursdays practice.
Hurd and another UT student a non-football player were arrested by citation on Dec. 3 after university police spotted a car with its lights on in a parking garage late at night, according to a report uncovered by The Tennessean.
Weve handled that internally, and well continue to handle that, Jones said after Thursdays practice inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. Thats been about a few weeks old now, and its just like raising your children. Its all about decisions and the one-second rule, and well continue to educate and talk to them, and its all about choices. And they understand that. We have good character kids in this program, and theyll continue that way.
Raising my three boys, I know at some point in time theyre gonna make probably a poor choice, and its all about how you handle it. Its being firm, and its being fair in your punishment, and its being stern and its being disciplined. I think we all who have had children (know) theyve made a bad decision one way or another, and you continue to educate him.
But our character of our football team and our kids is outstanding. Its just the power of choices.
Jones was asked to clarify if Hurds situation would affect his status for Tennessees Jan. 2 TaxSlayer (Gator) Bowl game against Iowa, and Jones said, No.
Tennessees coach, the son of a longtime police chief in a small Michigan town, said he does take underage alcohol consumption seriously, though.
Its a very big deal to us, Jones said. Maybe I look at things a little bit differently because I grew up in a law-enforcement house, so Ive seen it all. Ive seen just about anything and everything that you could see. Shoot, I used to sneak out at midnight and ride around in a police car with my dads police officers. If my dad knew about that, Id probably have been in trouble, and theyd be in trouble. But I think thats really helped me.
We take great pride in that. We spend an inordinate amount of time with our personal growth and development here, and we talk about those issues. And, again, being here for bowl practice has actually accelerated that program. We spent about 15 minutes today talking about that, as well.
Thats something that we talk about every day. We talk about every societal issue. We talk about it.
Hurd, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound five-star signee from the Nashville area in the 2013 class, collected 994 total yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns this season, starting eight of the Vols 12 games as a true freshman.
