So does Larry the Cable Guy, Jeff Foxworthy and a plethora of others, including various 'reality shows.' It sucks but I'm not sure we can do anything about it.

The problem with Finebaum and even the comedians I listed is that it was ok when they were reaching a regional audience in the South but it changes and becomes problematic when it reaches a national audience. Finebaum, until very recently, was pretty regional. I just wish his show wasn't on the SECNetwork as though we were giving it a stamp of approval and saying "this is what we're like" because we're not. Anyone who has traveled can tell you there's knuckledraggers everywhere in equal measure but because of those old stereotypes of southerners as dumb it makes changing perceptions way too hard.

We're a diverse region in all regards but that's not the image that sells.

People worry way to much about this crap and the people that sell it. They have never bothered me because I don't listen. That goes back to Howard Stern, Rush et al. They are all pandering for a subset of America that loves trainwrecks.

Almost every caller he has on perpetuates all the bad stereotypes of Southerners. I guess that is what makes money now a days.

I personally can't stand today's media, and I hate that sensationalism seems to have taken over sports media. Their is still some sanity and civil discussion left on TV, but you rarely see it these days.

If I didn't have the recruiting forum to read I might lose all faith in humanity.

Excellent. The headline reads, "VN Elites Maintain People's Faith in Humanity"

Well, looks like Mike Williams isn't sweating the rape accusation...

Take the pic for yourself but I'm not sure he should've posted that even he feels/thinks he's innocent and/or feels he will be exonerated. That photo courts controversy while the jury is still out and charges are looming and could also come back to bite him if the the grand jury does charge.

The professor is probably sending him a Christmas card also.

This.

I see a young man that seems happy with his academic progress towards a degree and appears happy and care free. He is innocent unless proven guilty and if found guilty I'm sure this picture will be the least of his concerns.

I see no controversy with this picture. Not like he took a picture with a wad of cash and a gun.

Upvoted for the latter half about pandering and trainwrecks but I disagree that people worry about it too much. You can't live your life getting upset about every stereotype but that doesn't mean it's right that they exist and you shouldn't try to fight back or recognize the harm they do.

There's a real problem when the country assumes you're dumb. It effects a lot more than folks might realize, even your job prospects, presumed intelligence, and other qualities to some degree because there's an automatic assumption that certain accents = lower intelligence. What's odd is that studies have shown we even stereotype ourselves in adulthood to an extent (southern children don't tend to have that bias). That's just a few examples but there are others. Ironically this seems to be an issue in the UK as well - certain accents hurt your employment as well as respect just like here.

While I agree that's what the photo speaks to (happiness with his academic progress), people will be all over him for being happy with charges looming. Hell, people complain when folks don't look awful in their mugshots.

We can blame Uncle Jed and the rest of the Clampetts for that stereotype, can't we?

High school classmate who I still keep up with on Facebook has that same sour Bama fan living in Tennessee outlook. It's not enough that they're perennial NC players...they have an unnatural aversion to anything positive happening for us...runs counter to their god that these things run in cycles. Suggesting possible success for Tennessee is tantamount to making it illegal for a man to marry his sister.
