i haven't seen anyone talk about a bowl that would match up Texas A&M with Texas... perhaps the Texas Bowl. I think that would be good for college football after all the back and forth with those two recently.

a&m doesn't want to play texas and they told the SEC not to pair them up. I don't know what the whole story is, but it goes something like a&m wanted to play texas and texas didn't want to after they moved to the SEC, probably more about money and the longhorn network than anything.

Report: SEC, A&M would nix bowl game vs. Texas | CollegeFootballTalk

Could be some serious shake up in the final four after this weekend. GA Tech and Arizona have a good chance at upsets. Then watch Urban slime his way in after upsetting Wisconsin.

I don't think the average fan cares what Butch is paid. I don't understand why everybody here does.

It's not my money. Pay him $20 million a year for all I care, just don't word the contract so he can't be terminated if he doesn't fulfill expectations.

Also, coaching salaries are going through a period of inflation. 4 million now is what 3.5 was before the SEC network went 24/7.
Because if you have to fire him, then you are screwed with the buyout. If your screwed with a buyout, you can't afford a big time coach. This cycle will just continue.

While it would be great to win the bowl and go out on a high note, at this point the 15 extra practices are far, far more valuable than another win.

Speaking of which--will the coaching staff concentrate primarily on game planning for the opponent in the coming weeks, or are bowl practices more development/fundamentals and a segue to spring practice?

I would say spring practice up until a week before the bowl and then regular practice

Little brothers grow up. TA&M is right not to play to UTx's aspirations.

Not wanting to continue a rivalry when a school leaves the conference is one thing. Flat out refusing to play them in a neutral site bowl game is another.

I follow and for now I can still see the forest despite all the trees planted. At 4 million my vision starts getting blurry. It could be one of those sour grapes contracts quick with say 6-7 wins next year. With the way our line has looked I think Butch would be jumping the shark anything north of 3.75 with fan and booster good will. Just my 2 cents.

Why does money that you aren't responsible for even remotely affect your vision?

It isn't like Jones making more means you, or anyone here, makes less, right?

Its too soon in my book. I say let conference realignment settle out a bit more. Just a different take.

I just want to go bowling. Don't care who or where.

And then I want to win.

No excuse not to win with time to heal and prepare.

Hopefully it will be the Belk Bowl. Better city, stadium, better for recruiting, better match up.

I am sure Butch would roll with either, but I have heard things that insinuate that Butch would very much like the Liberty Bowl for the Memphis presence. They have already made inroads in North Carolina, and the UNC mess is only getting worse. Despite what some believe on here, Memphis is in TN, and he wants to continue the in-state domination. As Harold Graeter of the Libery Bowl stated, there are 9,000 UT alums within 25 miles of the city. Those will be heard again when UT regains its dominance. JMO.

Just want to say this is my favorite thread. I joined up in the Gruden fun and then almost quit this site all together a few months later because I thought the FF was all there was and I got tired of the insanity.

You guys are a lot of fun to read and discuss with, and you have a (fairly) new RF convert in me. I've enjoyed the nation a lot more since I discovered this gem a few months ago. :hi:

I'd agree unless the bowl game loss somehow made us look so bad we lose commits. But even then it's debatable

Precisely.

I don't get it either.

Let's say, hypothetically, that UT pays Jones everything that they could afford and writes a check for something ludicrous like 20 million a year. And, let's say that after two years he doesn't work out. That salary would put you on the radar of every major coach in the U.S. when the time comes to replace him.

Conversely, let's say that UT gets Jones to work for $50,000 dollars a year, and in two years he miraculously wins a national championship. Is there an extra award given for most valuable coach per dollar? Will the rest of the football world look around and say ''Tennessee, we applaud your fiscal responsibility, thank you for being a beacon in the night"? Nope.

Let's do the math on this.

Say he has a 20 mill/year contract for say 5 years.

We fire him 2 years into it........

There is a buyout. We would have to pay him a large amount of money. You don't just fire coaches and say "hit the road". They have contracts. This particular fantasy contract would end football at UT forever if it didn't work out.

Texas was hurt by A&M leaving the Big 12 and the Horns discontinued the annual Thanksgiving Day game as a result. A&M is within their rights to refuse a bowl game with Texas, but it would be a serious recruiting edge for the school that wins a bowl game between them. A&M has that edge right now.

We need results (Wins) to justify paying someone 4 million per IMO. I know he is working his butt off. Part of the reason I put us probably in the 12-15 range of programs is because we have to recruit nationally. Programs such as Florida can get in a car and visit 90% of their recruits.

If he were to win 9 games next year, pay the man. I'm just not a fan of paying a guy 4 million that is going to complete his second season with WAIT FOR IT......

THE SAME RECORD AS DOOLEY after his second year.

I will say it again. As mush as us fans think it is, salary is not all about the coach's won-loss record. It simply isn't. There are MANY things that go into it. Do you want Derek Dooley as an employee or do you want Butch Jones as an employee?

It is also like investing in a stock: you are putting money into it knowing enough about it. But, you expect the company to make money and keep growing and at some point in the future, you will be rewarded.
