That's not why I brought this topic up. Because if some website. I'll leave it at that

Looks like you're portraying yourself as some sort of insider here, along with the claim Payne is gonna get a "Getshirt." We'll see in time if you're legit like some, or phony like others.

I said Payne is closer to a getshirt than starting.

I wouldn't want us to be looking for a new coach this year, even with a better team (on paper). Lots of high profile teams looking for coaches and our money situation isn't as good as some others yet.

I would not want it to happen either Most know I was big time CBJ and against Charlie Strong before the hire was even made. That said, like with Charlie Strong, I would not over pay just to keep/get a guy. CBJ left Cinci making around 1.5 million I believe. Here it is just 2 years later and IMO he is worth 3.25 to Tennessee today. He wants more than that, I say Hart may need to take a look around.

Just hope if that happens this isn't the coaching candidate landscape Hart sees.

This little boy, AJ, got a gift from the Vols before his chemo treatment

I don't think it would be bad. Most view UT on a major upswing. The roster is very strong headed into next year and most of the starters are returning. CBJ showed that a guy could come in without an SEC background and recruit very well to TN(I've always said UT recruits itself if the guy running the show puts in the work). UT is paying 3 million now. Obviously in the scenario CBJ took another job, UT would have the added buyout money. IMO they would be shopping in the 4 million range. I think it would be an attractive job now. Most coaches would see it CBJ deciding to go home and not a negative on UT. I think there would be a lot of interest.

No doubt thing are on an upward trajectory. Facilities are great, fan base is loyal, roster is still young but upgraded talent wise but still a work in progress as far as depth goes, and Tennessee as a State is producing better talent. Hamilton ran this place into the ground. I think the main issue is still the financial side of things but even that looks like it's getting better. Hart and Butch deserve a lot of credit for getting things going in the right direction. Now all we need to win some games and beat the snot out of Bama, UGA, and Florida.

I'm ready for the VFL Films hype video of 2014 highlights. The one they did of the 2013 season was incredible.

If CBJ wants to go, it's likely one of two scenarios: 1) he's all about the money or 2) it's a job he'd rather have at a place he'd rather be. Giving him a small raise and extension won't position UT better either way.

If he's all about the money, Michigan is considering coaches (i.e., Harbaugh and Miles) in the $5M+ range and we won't pay CBJ that. And if he'd rather be at UM because he grew up in Michigan, or at Notre Dame because he's Catholic and following Brian Kelly has set him up well in the past, then we can't offer that, either. We need a coach that wants to be at UT, not somewhere else. That seems to be Butch, but if it isn't, then he's gonna go.

I can't imagine Butch bolting right now. He's well-compensated and teeing up to win. The big money will come.

He already said he wasn't taking the job. Just because some website made him the 3rd favorite doesn't mean he is looking to peace out all the sudden.

If Butch turned out to be another lying liar who lies, then I would say good riddance. I want someone who loves this place and wants to be here.

I think he does.

We are in better position now than when Dooley was here, but heck, we probably could be if I was the coach (and I never played). Folks are fooling themselves if they think a new coach could step right in and keep the upward trajectory. This program needs 3-4 solid recruiting classes.

Our recruiting class could be a major overhaul if we had to change coaches, and right now, it is great. This is interesting to discuss, but I think Butch realizes this is a special program and can win here. I don't see him leaving.

My guess is CBJ won't bolt. I also think a solid raise is justified.

I'm in the minority I'm sure, but I actually thought the Vandy win was a sign of tangible progress for our program, which is a credit to CBJ. That was basically a replay of the type of game we kept losing each year (UK 2011, Mizzou 2012, Vandy 2013) against inferior opponents that was among the things that was holding us back. I was afraid the whole game that the team was going to collapse again, but they fought through adversity and won. I saw it as getting over another mental and emotional hump of sorts for the program. Every team has an off week, and this time it didn't kill us. Championship teams and programs win those types of games.

I also think we are primed to explode back on the national scene next year. Losing CBJ would set us back yet again...

This is true. I'll be as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs if Butch still hasn't signed an extension after Harbaugh and Miles turns down Michigan.

Butch may or may not be the long term answer here but we cannot go through ANOTHER coaching change right now.

Yep. I had that same sinking feeling during the 3rd and 4th quarters of the Vandy game, but the team took care of business. I was surprised.

Butch is not even one of Michigan's top 3 choices. Trust me. I'm not saying he isn't someone they'd consider but he's much farther down their list of potential HC's than some are leading you to believe. And I'll leave it at that.

I agree with this. 6-6 is progress record wise this year as opposed to 5-7 last year. Next year, I'm feeling at least 8 wins...maybe more.

There's more to progress than just the record. The D has made tremendous strides since last year and IMO, every coach on the defensive side of the staff has earned a raise. I found myself many times during the course of the year saying that we finally have an SEC defense. Can't wait until next year.

Something that doesn't get discussed a whole lot is the special teams play. This has been the most consistent part of the game all season outside of the defense. You can tell that Butch has put a lot of emphasis on that aspect of the game.

Butch isn't going anywhere. Didn't Dave Hart say recently this was prob the best job of coaching he's seen from this staff this year of all the places he's been?

We were the only school in FBS returning zero starters on both lines, which is almost unheard of. Not to mention playing one of the toughest schedules in all of cfb while playing 24 true Fr as well as all the injuries we suffered throughout the season with limited depth.

Also, Butch and staff are relentless in recruiting and Butch may invest just as much if not more into recruiting than anyone else on the staff. He's not just the "closer." He's on the road as much as everyone else on staff.

He has repaired relationships that have been fragile for quite a while with the academic people on campus and, imo, truly has everyone at UT, whether directly involved with the football program or not, buying into the One Tennesse slogan.

He has put in too much work bringing this program out of the dumpster fire it was in on so many levels to walk away now for a little more money somewhere else. The foundation is laid for a great run. Butch knows it, Dave Hart knows it, I can see it, and unless you're blind every Vol fan should see it too.

I feel very confident Dave Hart will restructure Butch's contract well enough so that Butch knows he'll be taken care of down the road when this program explodes back onto the scene very soon. He may not get a huge raise and it's likely Mich could easily offer him more, but he knows what's coming after all the time he's put in laying this very solid foundation.

Yeah, I can see why people think he doesn't deserve a huge raise after a 6-6 season. Sry but 6-6 is a helluva job considering what he was working with on the field and what he's done behind the scenes off the field that people don't see. JMO
