Also, more goes into it than a 6-6 season. It may not to us fans, but the administration considers other things. How is the culture? How are the students' academic records? How is recruiting? Are former players coming back? How is fundraising? I would venture to guess that all of those are positive under Butch Jones.
Gonna pick out this part of your post because I wish more fans acknowledged this.
I see all of these people proclaiming "8-4 next year or Jones is officially on the hot seat" or something to that effect, and I think that is just a vast oversimplification. The record is important, yes, but it's not the only factor. It's also easily influenced by factors over which coaches have only a marginal degree of control: fluke plays, injuries/suspensions to either team, bad calls against either team, bad weather, and more. 2013 Auburn was proof of that phenomenon in the positive direction, but just as many or more instances go the other way.
Ultimately, I care a lot more about visible improvement, both on and off the field, than I do about the record. Our team was clearly much better than last year - I don't think the 1-win improvement does it justice. There was a noticeable difference in team speed, several players had clearly made strides, several new players made a big impact for us. And that's before considering the other factors that VolGee mentioned. I want to see a similar leap from this year to next. If we continue to see those leaps, then the record will eventually take care of itself.
That's what I want to see. Bad years and bad games are always painful when they happen, but in the long run I would be much more concerned by a trend of year-over-year stagnation (or regression) than a single bad result. We've yet to see evidence of any such trend.
