Just went back and rewatched the game. I was at the game so I missed a lot of things that I picked up on a second viewing on TV.

-Losing Hurd hurt a lot. Not only is Hurd a much better option at running back than Lane at this point (who actually ran extremely hard), but he's also a huge part of the passing game with his blocking ability. He would have also cleared room for Dobbs to run.

-The TEs weren't used in the passing game because they were blocking on almost every offensive play.

-The OL got abused all night. At one point Wiesman completely whiffed on a block and allowed a Vandy defender to stuff Lane in the backfield which led to us settling for a field goal off 1st and goal.

-The WRs weren't getting open at all. So not only did Dobbs barely have any time to pass, he didn't really have anyone to pass it to anyway. His second interception was really bad, though. It looked like he was targeting Pearson who was running down the sideline and had his guy beat, but Dobbs underthrew it by about 20 yards. Just an awful throw. I'm just not sure about his arm strength. I thought he had a pretty strong arm, but some of throws are reminiscent of Worley's ducks circa the WKU game last year.

-Our secondary is great at picking off passes (Kelly's was highlight-reel worthy) but the coverage was....bad. It seemed like Vandy's WRs had a step on our guys all night, but they dropped at least 4-5 passes. There was one early in the game that their TE Scheu dropped that might have gone for six, and another on their last drive that would have set them up for a shot into the end zone.

-Speaking of their last drive, Danny O'Brien made a game-saving tackle of Robinette during a scramble. Robinette had 25 yards of daylight in front of him and O'Brien dove and barely got his ankle causing him to trip and fall. Without that tackle, that game goes to OT, IMO.

-Vandy's last TD by Ralph Webb was extremely impressive. He got hit in the backfield by what looked like Jakob and Maggitt, but he bounced off, broke another tackle at the goal line and powered into the end zone.

-Overall, the defensive line won us the game--namely, Maggitt and Barnett. Without them getting pressure on Robinette and McRrary all night, Vandy would have moved the ball easily through the air because their WRs were constantly getting open.

A bowl win would be a really nice final push for recruiting. I'm meh on 6-6 especially how we limped to the close. I know it was warranted with all the player losses but by bowl time we should be healthy and regrouped.

Maybe this will make you feel a little better about that win. We're ranked 118th in sacks given up - there are only 125 teams and we gave up 42 sacks (we all know it would've been a lot more without Dobbs in those last few games). Temple is ranked 45th (above them is a multiple team tie for 41st those teams include: Miss. St., FSU, and Vandy) -- all of those teams gave up ~20-21 sacks.

To say that we have the worst OL in the country is not hyperbole. I just think it's hard for some of us to fathom how bad it's been given that our offense has shown flashes of greatness all year and we've found ways to play way above ourselves against opponents we had no real business (talent wise) competing with.

When Crowder went out it was an enormous blow to that line which had struggled all year. To win despite all of that is an accomplishment.

Agreed. People couldn't believe that UTC's defensive line could be better than our "SEC" offensive line, but it's true. In fact, we probably would have been better off this season with Chattanooga's offensive line.

That's kinda why I hope Butch goes after UAB's top offensive linemen if the program indeed shuts down. If we could get a senior/redshirt senior or two and if Blair is serviceable next year, our Oline will improve from god awful to mediocre. Right now the best we can likely hope for is god awful to just plain awful.

I love these posts.

To try to cut down on wasting time browsing and trying to find the best deal....does anyone know of any great cyber Monday sales on Vol apparel/gear/etc.? Please....

People swore Crowder sucked. Said he was the worst. Now I hear losing him hurt tremendously. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is a whole lot of bad juju on that offense. Dobbs had his worst night. Worst by a lot. Lost Hurd. So many recievers gone. 0 continuity at nearly any position from week one to final week.

Next year!

I hope

I'd throw a party if we could just get to plain awful or plain bad and would throw a neighborhood party if we could get to mediocre. Would love to bring in some of UAB's linemen if we could. I don't know how many times I've repeated that damn near everyone on our line has been forced to play out of their natural positions because we simply didn't have the warm bodies necessary. The recruiting on OL was beyond pitiful - not just a lack of bodies (bad enough and going a cycle with zero has proven as catastrophic as we all knew it would be - thanks Dooley) but the warm bodies that were recruited aren't all in the right spot/position.

As frustrating as it is our current coaches are right that the OL is a developmental position and that gives us no easy fix unless we hit the lottery and find the Derek Barnett of olinemen which is highly unlikely due to the nature of the OL.

Hopefully we can find some sort of fix here but it's not going to come easy. Next year will be better for the OL with the experience they've gained but I'd love to take the jump to mediocre and actually have more than one player in his natural position.

Over on Rivals I saw where it's posted Tim Brando said Scott Frost to Nebraska is a done deal.

That was my guess...bringing that Oregon offense which is the best resemblance to those Osborne schemes out there right now.

He trucked Todd Kelly on that play to get in the end zone. Horrible tackling.

Think the second int was a miscommunication. Looked like Dobbs thought he was going to run an in route and Pearson ran a go. Know.

Would love to bring in some of UAB's linemen if we could. .

Here are the OT's on UAB's roster (their linemen are all listed as OL, so OT is based on 247 listings). All were 2-stars except Kennedy and Novick, who appear to be non-rated.

Daniel Anousheh, 6'4 270, JR
Cameron Blankenship, 6'5 292, JR
Christopher Hudson, 6'5 280, FR
Hunter Kennedy, 6'3 285 FR
Ryan Krum, 6'5 325 JR
Bryant Novick 6'5 315 RS FR
Victor Salako 6'6 315 RS SO

Is it safe to say every position except MLB will be improved next year? That's gotta count for another win or so. Hopefully we can get to 7 or 8 next year.

Hey fellas, I don't follow recruiting as much during the season but now in this off time I delve deeper into it. I have a quick question. I know we still need an offensive tackle for sure but what other positions are in real need and who are some prospects? I see the Kirkland kid picking up steam. Also, do we need to get some more guys in the secondary? I'll hang up and listen

Novick and Salako have good size. They're both tackles right? Wouldn't mind picking one of them up if they can play.

I wonder how many other big name programs would actually want those guys? I know Penn State's offensive line is also garbage, but I think proximity to UAB would help us quite a bit.

That and the chance to play against the mothership that cut their program!

According to the UAB website Salako is an honor roll kid in both College and HS and after RS year he played in all their games as a RS freshman. Started 11 of 12. Additionally this site lists him as 40 best OT prospect out of 142. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=125059&draftyear=2017&genpos=OT

Want
2013: Saw action in all 12 contests last season and started 11 as a redshirt freshman ... member of Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.

2012: Did not see any action at UAB and was redshirted.

High School: Attended Grissom High School ... played defensive line sophomore and junior year, and offensive line as a senior ... a 2011 All-City Second Team offense selection ... recorded 11 pancake blocks and did not allow a sack his senior year ... voted team's best offensive lineman as a senior ... named team's best defensive lineman his sophomore and junior years ... had 58 tackles, including 26 solo takedowns his junior year, adding four sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries ... made the A/B honor roll all four years.

Yep the strength of their pass game is TEs and our current weakness was no AJ. They picked on Jakob in the passing game like people used to pick on AJ when he was younger. Also I don't know why but we tend to drop a D end in coverage on a TE or RB and that's just asking for trouble. Maggit would have been burned if QB had time on one play but luckily barnett and Obrien collapsed the pocket.
