How excited was Cutcliffe to leave UT?

so excited that he's still coaching at UT for 2 more weeks

What else has he got to do, prep Duke for their bowl?

Unless he thinks this may be his last bowl game...

He might, and he might be right. It is also a lot easier for UT to not have to shake up the staff until after the game.

I don't see what is so hard to understand about it. I admire loyalty, but not when it involves a 500% pay increase.

I was very sorry to note Coach Cut leaving. I did not think he would go to Duke regardless of the $$, but I wish him the very best in health and in a monumental task in front of him, of course a .500 season will get him an extention.

I would say he was SUPER excited....He is taking a 1.2 Million buck raise.

I would say he is skipping and jumping....Heck....I would be!

i think the heat Fulmer and the staff has taken because of the lack of a SEC championship at UT this decade contributed

He will never have a QB as talented as Jay Cutler playing for him in Durham. I'll bet my life savings on it right now. No decent QB is going to Duke. They are a joke.

and vanderbilt's not? step it kpt. just because football's over doesn't mean that you can start slacking on post quality.:eek:k:

I wish Coach C the best. I suppose this means that CPF gave him no indication that he was leaving anytime soon, leaving the HC job vacant.

Just an observation.

People are crazy. It aint like he pulled a Petrino or Saban. The guy was an OC and he took a helluva raise to go to a place that can ONLY go up. Holy shizzle it's a win-win. The guy came here and in his second year back we go to the SEC championship game and people (including me) question his calls.

Vanderbilt is a powerhouse compared to Duke. They also have a coach who isn't a completely pathetic recruiter.

Less than a week ago, Cutcliffe seemed unsure if quarterback Sean Renfree from Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale, Ariz., was Vol worthy. Renfree said early last week that Cutcliffe wasn’t ready to offer a scholarship to UT and was still evaluating Renfree. There’s no such deliberation at Duke.

“He called me within a couple of hours when he took the job and offered me a scholarship to come to Duke,” Renfree said.

Renfree seemed hesitant to enter a rebuilding situation, which will be the case at Duke. Still, Cutcliffe made a strong pitch.

“He said he can assure me he’ll have one of the best (coaching staffs) in the nation,” Renfree said. “He mentioned a couple of pro guys are going to be on the staff but I don’t remember any names or specifics.”

hmmmmmm i think i need to rethink my opinion on cut!!

Please. We've got Phil to thank for that one. Peyton came to UT to win a championship. He didn't go to Ole Miss because he knew that he wouldn't have the opportunity for one in Oxford. He said as much himself.

The talent remaining at Ole Miss when Cut was shown the door tells you all you need to know about Cut's recruiting ability.

peyton and archie said in an interview that cutcliffe was the reason that peyton chose tennessee over everyone else. he could have went to florida to win a championship. anyway, merry christmas.

You put Cutcliffe as head coach of Ole Miss and keep Phil at UT and Peyton is still headed to Rocky Top.

so why did eli go to ole miss?

Peyton wanted to leave and make a name for himself. Mission accomplished. Eli wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. UT was never really in the race for Eli.

Looking back now, both got what they wanted. Peyton became a legend at UT and Eli ensured that the name Manning will forever be on any Ole Miss QB record.

Wonder if he took 40 on a stright shot or hit 85, then hit 77 hitting 40 at Winston Salem?

I wonder these things.

I seriously might hit up the Duke spring game if it's open to public. Which I mean why wouldn't it be.

81 to 77 to US 52 to 40
Sorry, just couldn't let Bill get to you first.

I think "Rut" was desparate to be a HC again, then again once your a HC and have to go back to an assistant again its probably tough. I wish him the best, I think he definitely be an upgrade for Duke. I'll follow Duke football - well I'll at east check the boxscore or bottom line ticker on the tv for their score.

I think this can eventually be a good thing for UT then again if Phil plays Mr. Loyal it may not be a good thing.

We're in TROUBLE if we lose Taylor, for those that are close to the program know, he is OUR recruiting right now and has been, the guy is as smooth as silk.

Seems pretty easy to understand. Cut has already had heart surgery, and a five year deal at 1.5 mill per year is pretty hard to turn down. Anyone would take that deal and look out for their family. It would be irresponsible and Stupid not to. I hope he does a good job a bringing Duke up from the lowest place in college football. I just hope Phil doesn't take us there eventually.
I just read an article about Tubberville bringing in a spread type offense next year. Not a total conversion, but some spread to break things up. He said it was due to the number of top 10 teams running that type offense. Wow! A coach that actually changes with the times and can see the need for something new!

sneaking into Wallace Wade Stadium the next morning and walking the campus before meeting with Alleva. I was at a place that just spelled pride. The buildings said:
you felt like you were on hallowed grounds."[/COLOR]

It must have been really dark and he accidentally stumbled into Cameron Indoor Stadium.

I live in Durham. Been here 25 years. But I was born in Cookeville TN and have made the trip back countless times to visit family. I-40 is a direct shot. No reason to go any other way unless there is major road construction or fallen rocks blocking the road (which happens from time to time).

The Duke campus is very impressive. Gothic architecture. Duke Chapel is an amazing structure.

But I wonder what Cut REALLY thought when he walked into Wallace Wade Stadium for the first time. For those that haven't been there, it's a horseshoe that holds about 34,000. It's a little run down, but it's sort of picturesque. Several years ago SI said Wally Wade was the "best place in America to watch bad football":birgits_giggle:

But after coaching at Neyland all these years, being in little Wallace Wade Stadium in the early morning hours must have seemed like being in another world.

I will say this: the atmosphere at Wallace Wade has been pretty much non-existent for a dozen years or so. But it can actually be pretty good if Duke can find a way to win. The last time I remember a great atmosphere at Duke was the Duke-Virginia game late in the 1994 season when Duke won 8 games and went to the Hall of Fame Bowl (against Wisconsin, by the way - Duke lost 34-20 if memory serves).

Anyway, it must have been strange when Cut walked in there for the first time.
